Josh explores Tasmania, one shrimp at a time

Honours student Josh dives into all things caves, climates and crustaceans.

High in Tasmania’s national parks and deep within its ancient caves, a tiny creature is helping reveal the effects of climate change. It’s also inspiring a young researcher’s passion for science.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) student Josh Greenhill is investigating the mountain shrimp, an endemic species found only in Tasmania’s alpine and cave environments. His research explores how these fascinating crustaceans are responding to a warming world.

"The cave environment is so different to the surface," Josh said.

"There’s no light, no seasonal change, and the shrimp that live there have developed specialised traits to survive.

"It’s amazing biology and a great indicator of how species might adapt – or not – to climate change."

Josh’s project focuses on the thermal tolerance of both cave and surface shrimp populations. By comparing their responses to temperature change, he hopes to understand how climate variability could affect these animals and other cave-dwelling species.

"The cave shrimp live in a narrow temperature range, between 8 and 12 degrees year-round," he said. "There’s concern they might not be able to cope with warmer conditions, especially compared to their surface counterparts."

Supported by the University of Tasmania’s staff and scholarship resources, Josh has been able to combine his love for nature with academic discovery. From fieldwork in remote parks to lab analysis on campus, the experience has been both exciting and transformative.

"The support I’ve had here has made a huge difference," he said. "My supervisors, the gear, and access to incredible natural places have made it possible. It’s helped me fall in love with learning in a new way."

Fieldwork has been a standout for Josh. Trekking through alpine terrain and exploring caves in search of shrimp may not be typical coursework but, for him, it’s where research comes alive.

“I’ve always been curious about the environment, but this project has made that curiosity real. It’s deepened my care for nature and my desire to share that with others.”

Josh hopes to pursue a career in science communication, combining research with public engagement. And his research may help inform conservation efforts and policy, particularly around vulnerable cave ecosystems.

"Studying science isn’t just about answers," he said. "It’s about helping others understand why questions matter.

"The mountain shrimp might seem small, but they’re part of a bigger picture about biodiversity and climate resilience.

"If cave species are more at risk from warming, we need to pay closer attention to these hidden environments – they’re out of sight, but they matter."

As his honours project continues, Josh is thinking ahead to further study or a role that lets him connect science with the broader public.

"This experience has shaped me. The University has supported me to do something meaningful. I want to keep learning and keep sharing."
