Transport in Tasmania

Tasmania faces a range of transport policy challenges. The state’s small and dispersed population makes it difficult to provide efficient and financially sustainable public transport – particularly outside major urban centres – resulting in a heavy reliance on private vehicles for daily travel. This creates challenges for accessibility, congestion, social inclusion and emissions reduction. Tasmania also has the oldest vehicle fleet in Australia, and combined with our reliance on road freight, this means the transport sector is one of Tasmania’s largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. This represents one of the state’s most significant opportunities for emissions reduction through greater uptake of electric vehicles, active transport and improved public transport services.
