Emergency management is when our communities, the public sector (government agencies), the private sector (businesses) and the not-for-profit sector (charities) work together to strengthen society’s capacity to withstand, plan for, respond to and recover from disasters. This unit will provide you with an introductory knowledge of the broader concepts of emergency management. In this unit, you will explore local, national, and international case studies of emergency management in numerous contexts that are applicable and transferable to any discipline. This an introductory unit (level 1) to emergency management. Consequently, the assessment tasks allow you to explore a topic in the context of emergency management that is relevant to your interests and has real world applicability regardless of your specific area of study. Therefore, if you have a passion for enhancing society’s disaster resilience to natural hazards (e.g. bushfires, floods, cyclones, tsunamis, etc.) and man-made disasters (e.g. humanitarian crises, acts of terrorism, environmental incidents, etc.) then this unit is for you.

• Introduction to Emergency Management (HSP101)

This unit examines policy and governance in emergency management. Students will examine policy and governance frameworks and structures from a local, state, national and international perspective. The unit will explore the policy and governance processes, structures and frameworks that span the public, private and not-for-profit sectors using a series of case studies that have real-world applicability. This unit is an introductory (level 1) emergency management unit focused on understanding policy and governance in the context of emergency management.

• Emergency Management Policy and Governance (HSP102)

This unit examines the process of decision making in emergency management. You will analyse the elements that contribute to decision making in dynamic, complex, and uncertain environments as experienced in emergency management. The unit will address the processes, structures, and approaches of decision making, including the concepts of situational awareness and common operating picture in the context of emergency management. This unit is an advanced (level 3) emergency management unit where you will be presented with a range of examples which you can reflect upon, in order to analyse the decision making process in emergency management.

• Decision Making in Emergency Management (PEM320)

This unit examines the application of general management principles to the particular context of emergency management, where normal challenges are further complicated by system failures, inadequate information, complex multi-agency and whole of community approaches and a challenging political and social environment. The unit will examine the management principles through the cycle of emergency management involving the prevention and mitigation phase, preparedness phase, response phase, and recovery phase. It will also explore specific management issues that are central to effective emergency management practice, including the impact of socio-technical systems design and human factors. This unit is an intermediate (level 2) emergency management unit focused on emergency management in disasters. This unit will present a range of examples upon which to reflect, in order to critically analyse the cycle of emergency management.

• Emergency Management Cycle (HSP235)

• Crisis Management (HSP505)

Protective Security relates to security governance (including supporting a positive security culture), information security (including cyber security), personnel security (including employees and contractors) and physical security (providing a safe and secure physical environment for an organisation’s people, information and assets). This fully online unit provides you with a thorough understanding of the concepts and practical applications of Protective Security. You will gain an appreciation of the issues and elements that underlie the practice of Protective Security and draw upon theoretical concepts, real life case studies and relevant standards. This unit will provide you with the knowledge and skills to translate and communicate theoretical concepts in Protective Security into tangible outputs for industry. This unit, together with crisis management, business continuity management, and the ability to lead resilient organisations, are collectively the underpinning foundation for enhancing organisational resilience. The unit provides you with an understanding and the requisite skills that will be interrelated with these units should you proceed further with your postgraduate studies in organisational resilience.
