An Honours year is a one-year full time or part time program designed for high-achieving students who are ready to deepen their expertise and explore their passion through research.
The Honours year in Media and Communications offers you the opportunity to gain a competitive edge in the media industry while exploring a project you are genuinely passionate about. It combines advanced coursework with a thesis based on a topic you develop yourself, allowing you to investigate virtually any area of media, from politics to podcasts.
Throughout the year, you will engage with major issues in contemporary media and communication, deepen your expertise, and refine your specialisation using advanced research and project skills. You will demonstrate your conceptual abilities through your project outcomes, which are assessed by leading figures in academia and industry.
This degree builds on your professional training in key areas of media production, and provides an advanced education in the history, theory, and professional practices of the field.
Your Honours project will be supported by a supervisor whose academic and industry expertise aligns with your topic.

In addition to the above, if you successfully complete this course, you may be also be eligible to apply for a range of other postgraduate courses including Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework and research.
- 1 Critically analyse media texts, industries, and audiences from both theoretical and practical perspectives using media studies principles, concepts and methods.
- 2 Respond effectively and creatively to a changing media environment, demonstrating industry-level problem solving, creative thinking, and critical analysis skills and advanced awareness of local, national, and international contexts.
- 3 Communicate effectively and ethically across a variety of media platforms, showing advanced abilities to communicate scholarly ideas in a meaningful and coherent way.
- 4 Design and produce an independent research project in the field of media studies and practice.

The Bachelor of Media and Communication with Honours is a progressive, internationally recognised course of study that prepares students for a career in the creative, media and information industries.
It provides access to a wide range of fields, including film, advertising, journalism, marketing, advocacy, television, strategic communications, radio and audio, media and screen business, events management, media research and media arts. Students develop in-demand skills in storytelling, media research, and production across a variety of platforms, learning from academics and industry practitioners who are leaders in their fields.

Course structure
In the Bachelor of Media and Communications with Honours you will complete 100 credit points comprising;
- 25 credit points of Core units
- 25 credit points of Core option units
- a 50 credit point research thesis or creative project and exegesis.
In your final semester, you will need to enrol in XSB400 which will record your final overall Honours result. This unit is administrative only and does not have classes or assessments.

Entry requirements
At least one of the General Entrance Requirements of the University, and the following course-specific entry requirements must be met for entry into the Bachelor of Media and Communication with Honours:
- Successful completion of a relevant bachelor’s degree with a major (or equivalent) in media and communication with a Distinction (70%) average at the University of Tasmania or another approved tertiary institution, or equivalent industry experience, and
- submission of a project proposal which can be supported by appropriate academic supervision

English Language Requirements
This degree requires an IELTS (Academic) of 6.0, with no individual band less than 5.5, or a PTE Academic score of 50, with no score lower than 42 or equivalent.
For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided. See the English Language Requirements page for more information.

Domestic students
Commonwealth supported places (CSP) are available for this course. For eligible domestic students, this means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.

HECS-HELP loans
