Research strengths highlighted during ASMR Week

The Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) is the peak body representing the Australian health and medical research sector.

A major highlight of the Australian health and medical research calendar is the Society’s flagship event, ASMR Medical Research Week®, in June.

It featured public outreach events, career events for high school and tertiary students and professional events for the health and medical research sector, including scientific meetings, professional development programs and the ASMR Medalist tour.

ASMR Medical Research Week® in Tasmania commenced with an Undergraduate Student Luncheon to increase awareness about medical research opportunities in Tasmania.

Second and third year undergraduate students listened to interactive lectures from researchers and postgraduate research students at the Medical Science Precinct which informed them about how they could become involved in medical research and what a medical research career looked like.

The lectures were followed by a lunch where undergraduate students interacted with researchers and learnt about their research programs.

The second major event as part of ASMR Medical Research Week® in Tasmania was the Postgraduate Student Awards, which attracted 33 applicants, with six finalists being selected to give a short presentation about their research.

The winner and runner up were announced and presented with their awards at the ASMR Gala Dinner.

This year’s prize went to Kelsey Hanson (Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre), and the runner up was Sionne Lucas (Menzies Institute for Medical Research).

Over 80 dignitaries, local medical researchers and postgraduate students attended the ASMR Gala Dinner, including ASMR Medalist 2018, Professor Hope Jahren.

Professor Jahren is an American geochemist, geobiologist and best-selling author who was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people (2016) and one of Popular Science’s “Brilliant 10” young scientists (2005).

ASMR is also hosting a Medical Research School Quiz open nationally to Year 7 – 12 students, including quiz questions developed by medical researchers from the University of Tasmania.

The quiz is open until the 2 July and there will prizes on offer for winners in each state. The quiz can be accessed at the following link:
