The 2018 Chancellor’s University of Tasmania Scholarship, the institution’s flagship scholarship, has been awarded to two of the State’s brightest school leavers.
The scholarships are awarded each year, one each to the top state school Year 12 leaver and the top private school (including Catholic and independent colleges) Year 12 leaver, to commence their undergraduate studies at the University of Tasmania.
This year’s recipients are:
- Miss Anni Zhang of Glenorchy, who attended Elizabeth College and achieved a tertiary entrance score of 99.95. Anni will be undertaking the Bachelor of Medical Research with Honours;
- Mr James Tucker of Kingston, who attended The Hutchins School and achieved a tertiary entrance score of 99.95. James will be undertaking the Bachelor of Medicine – Bachelor of Surgery.
University of Tasmania Chancellor the Hon. Michael Field AC said it was an honour to recognise the State’s top academic talent and help them achieve their educational aims.
“These are our most prestigious academic scholarships,” Chancellor Field said. “They are awarded only to those students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and Anni and James clearly fit the bill.
“We look forward to following their journey over the next several years and wish them every success in their studies.”
The scholarships are part of a new model which came into effect in 2016 and is aimed at keeping our best and brightest students in the State, studying at the University of Tasmania and building a life-long association with the University.
“The University of Tasmania is a world-class institution and we want our State’s smartest to stay here and study with us – it’s good for the University and it’s good for Tasmania,” Chancellor Field said.
The students will join the University’s Group of 50, high achieving scholarship recipients who meet several times a year, and have the opportunity to meet senior University leaders, mix with students from across the faculties and learn from guest speakers.
