University Club Honours Scholarships support health research

The 2018 University Club Honours Scholarships have been awarded to Jacqui Walker and Noor Khan.

Ms Khan, from Hobart, is studying a Bachelor of Arts with Psychology Honours at the School of Medicine.

Her Honours project forms part of the Multiple Sclerosis and Fatigue Research Group led by Dr Cynthia Honan, which is examining cognitive fatigue, social functioning and possible new biomarkers of fatigue related to the kynurenine metabolic pathway.

The scholarship enables Ms Khan to examine cognitive and social deficits in neuropsychological functioning associated with chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple sclerosis.

Her long-term goal is to complete a PhD in neurodegenerative disorders such as MS and dementia in conjunction with the Psychology Department and Menzies Institute for Medical Research.

Miss Walker, who has a passion for neuroscience, is also from Hobart and is studying a Bachelor of Biotechnology and Medical Research with Honours.

Her scholarship allows her to undertake a project which involves using genetically modified stem cells to investigate amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a form of motor neuron disease for which there is no cure.

The University Club introduced the $2,500 scholarship in 2008 to encourage talented students to continue their studies at the University of Tasmania.

Since 2011, two scholarships have been made available annually to students undertaking Honours at the University.

“The University Club supports the University of Tasmania’s scholarship program and the Honours Scholarships have provided the ability and inspiration for scholars to achieve great things,” University Club President Fiona Irwin said.
