Family the rock for nursing graduate

Family support and personal determination have been the major drivers of Bachelor of Nursing graduate Laura Wegman’s success.

Proud to have finally completed her degree and to be embarking on her new career in nursing, the 38-year-old mother of four said graduation day was as much a recognition of her family as it was of her academic success.

“The unconditional support of my whole family has enabled me to accomplish this degree,” she said.

“My family is my rock and without my husband Craig being like a ‘solo’ dad for three years, I would never have been able to put all the extra time and effort into my education.”

Mrs Wegman long held a passion for nursing and midwifery since the birth of her first child 14 years ago, which saw her retire after 20 years of hairdressing to work as a theatre hospital aide, midway through her studies.

Her decision to pursue nursing as a mature-age student, in addition to part-time work and family commitments, was challenging but something she is extremely proud of.

“Juggling fulltime studies, work and family life required exceptional organisational skills, ensuring everyone got to school, sports, work and extra-curricular commitments” she said.

“Things did not always go according to plan - and there were tears, but this reminded me I am still just human.”

While originally focusing on a pathway to midwifery, Mrs Wegman said her studies and professional experience placements had connected her to the different career possibilities nursing offered including theatre, emergency and paediatric nursing, all of which she was keen to explore.

“Nursing is not just acquiring degrees, it requires life-long learning paramount in providing each patient with the best experience and care.”

Whilst she is proud of her academic achievements and the determination she mustered to complete her degree, Mrs Wegman said Graduation Day was as much about her family as her.

“As a mother and a role model for my children, furthering my education has allowed them to realise if you work hard, anything is possible,” she said.

“However, while my nameis on my certificate, Graduation Day was as much my family’s day as mine.

“Without their support and working together as a team, this would never have been possible and for that I am truly grateful and blessed to have had them by my side.”
