The Power Lab is a large laboratory designed to demonstrate topics in power engineering such as electrical machines, power system, power electronics, electrical power design and renewable energy applications. It serves to train students on the operation of electrical machines and power electronics in the domain of electrical power systems and renewable energy.

Low-voltage electronic project work is also undertaken here. This includes design, soldering, debugging and repairing of surface mount and through-hole electronics.

Equipment: electrical machines, such as transformers, induction machines (WRIM and Cage), and synchronous machines. Students are also able to perform experiments with different types of power electronic converters (such as rectifiers, dc-dc converters and inverters) and renewable energy applications.

Other equipment includes three-phase power analysers, oscilloscopes, function generators, multimeters, power supplies, soldering stations and an industrial pick and place machine, digital microscope, reflow oven, hot air workstations.

  • Location: Room 202 – Ground floor of Engineering Laboratories Building.
  • Equipment: This is the main structural testing laboratory equipped with many testing machines designed to test specimens to Australian Standards. The equipment can carry out the following tests of torsion, compression, tension and bending moment.
  • Location: Room 219 – Ground floor of Engineering Laboratories Building.
  • Equipment: steam plant, engine stand dynamometers, air-conditioning apparatus, compressed air, fuel calorimetry, refrigeration, pressure, and temperature calibration.
