What the Bursary supports
Successful applicants will have their practical exam fee paid by the Bursary. This covers the exam itself, the qualification and supporting certificate, and the report from our expert Examiners with guidance to support your continued learning. This is not a separate certification - it's of equal standing both in terms of assessment and achievement. All AMEB practical exam syllabuses are eligible including Classical, For Leisure, Rockschool, Speech and Drama, and PAA exams.
Who it's for
The Bursary exists for learners who would otherwise miss out on doing an exam due to their financial situation. To ensure the finite funds go to where they'll have greatest impact, there are a few guidelines for who is eligible to apply, and how a Bursary can be used.
- Applicants must hold a current Health Care Card, or have reason to request consideration for a situation of exceptional hardship.
- Bursaries are not available where a scholarship or other funding already covers the exam fee.
- Applicants must have the support of their teacher (either instrumental/specialty or classroom specialty) to ensure they have the best possible chance for success.
- Preference will be given to learners who are applying for their first AMEB exam.
- Learners aiming to sit their exam up to and including Session 4*
The Bursary may be used for:
- A practical AMEB exam in any Syllabus and Grade available for assessment by AMEB.
- An exam in the calendar year of the application.
- Exams can be taken in any AMEB exam centre and during any Session up to and including Session 4.
*At AMEB's discretion, remaining Bursary funds may be available for Session 5.
More information is provided in the Bursary Ts and Cs.

How to apply
Start by having a read of the Bursary Terms and Conditions to ensure you're eligible and to get the full picture. You can also download the application summary to see what information we'll be asking for, and prepare ahead of time.
Don't forget to talk with your teacher and get their letter of support. Mentorship and guidance are key ingredients in setting you up for the best possible chance of success in your exam. Here are some ideas about what that letter might include:
- Their belief in you and your ability to achieve your exam goal.
- How they plan to support you in achieving your exam goal.
- The extent of their knowledge of AMEB syllabuses (or how they plan to approach the exam requirements).
- Other support mechanisms around you to help you in your learning journey, and achieve your exam goal.
- What benefit they see in you receiving the Bursary.
