Meet Michael Power

Michael Power is a collaborative pianist and teacher in Hobart. He completed a Bachelor of Music with Dr Gian-Franco Ricci and Helen English at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music, during which time he was awarded the Nan Price Memorial Scholarship. Michael specialised in chamber music and collaborative piano studies with Gabriella Pusner in the Honours program, and attended the Accademia Europea di Firenze Intensive Winter School.

Michael has performed with artists such Sally Walker and Andy Firth, and performed newly commissioned works by Australian composers including Elena Kats-Chernin, Paul Jarman, Don Kay, and Jim Coyle. He held the position of School Accompanist and Teacher of Piano at Newcastle Grammar School for 14 years, with which he toured as pianist to the USA and China, and held a similar position at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music.

Michael was the Vice President of Music Teachers' Association of NSW and served as the President of the Newcastle Branch, where he gave regular masterclasses, adjudicated competitions, and performed on local radio. He was a foundation member of the Newcastle Youth Orchestra, later holding the position as Manager. In 2019, Michael was a Community Director’s Award Program Recipient and subsequently holds a Diploma of Business (Governance) in arts leadership, and a Masters of Teaching (Secondary) from UTAS.

Since relocating to Hobart in 2020, Michael continues his work as both piano teacher and collaborative pianist. He performs at the Festival of Voices, and is a repetiteur and orchestral pianist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Michael was the founding pianist for JESSA and is the President of the Tasmanian Music Teachers' Association. In 2022, Michael joined the team of Examiners with AMEB Tasmania.
