Of all our syllabuses, the Band Syllabus is probably one with the widest scope to include a variety of instruments. It aims to support any brass band instrument, and is therefore split into Bb, Eb, and C versions. At Level 3, only Bb and Eb are available but, if you're playing a non-transposing instrument, you could consider a relevant orchestral brass syllabus for your Diploma.
Exams are available from Preliminary through to Associate so there's an entry point for absolutely everyone - regardless of prior experience. There are also no prerequisites so you can start achieving your exam goal wherever best suits your current knowledge and comfort.
What do I need to prepare for an exam?
The exam assesses a comprehensive set of learnings on (and in support of) your instrument. You'll prepare your program of music and set technical work (eg scales and studies). In the exam, you'll also answer questions on general knowledge, and be tested on aural and sight-reading.
Please note that Repertoire exams are not available for the Band Syllabus.
What instruments are examinable in the Band Syllabus?
Essentially any brass band instruments have an exam option with the Band syllabus. It's broken down into three versions to support the different keys of instruments available:
- Bb version: flugelhorn, baritone, tenor trombone, Bb and F trombone, bass tuba, euphonium
- Eb version: soprano cornet, tenor horn, bass tuba
- C version: bass trombone, tuba
Can I do my exam with my band mates?
It depends. In a Band exam, you're only allowed to be joined by an accompanist. However, if you're interested in doing an exam as a band, you should definitely check out our Ensemble Performance Syllabuses.
Can I use a Band exam toward an AMEB Award?
You certainly can! In fact, if you're like many people who love the performing arts, you're probably doing a lot toward achieving your next AMEB Award already! All AMEB exams from Grade 3 upwards - that includes PAA, Rockschool and Classical exams - could go towards an AMEB Award. Can I get TCE bonus points for Band exam?
Yes you can! And that goes for any AMEB exam, including all dance, drama, and music syllabuses. In fact, all practical exams are eligible for TCE bonus points from Grade 4 onwards, as well as Theory Grade 2+.
When can I do a Band exam?
Our face-to-face exams are available in the June/July and October/November sessions. We even have a special exam centre in Ulverstone just for Band and Brass candidates.
