The Certificate of Performance (CoP) is a unique exam that rounds off Level 2 (Grades 5 to CoP). It helps Candidates extend their musicianship beyond Grade 8, and is excellent preparation for the Associate of Music (AMusA) in Level 3.
The format of the CoP is very similar to the Diploma exams - it consists only of pieces and a viva voce (general knowledge-style) discussion with the Examiner.
There's just the one Examiner (unlike two in a Diploma) so the assessment may seem a little less daunting. Examiners know that the CoP is a recommended pathway to the AMusA and beyond. For that reason, the report comments will include helpful feedback that aims to guide your continued development toward achieving a Diploma.
Does every syllabus have a Certificate of Performance option?
Not quite yet but we're working on it. This grade is still a relatively new concept and was born out of an understood need to help Candidates bridge the significant increase in demands from Level 2 to 3. As our syllabuses undergo regular reviews, we're making sure we add a CoP grade where there wasn't one (or refresh the Lists if it already existed). Some recent examples include the Viola Syllabus (2023) and the refreshed Lists for Piano for Leisure (2024).
There are only a few syllabuses that don't have a CoP: Piano (Collaborative), Organ, Recorder, Tuba, and Band. But our publishing team has a plan to review all these syllabuses and you'll no doubt see a CoP coming out soon enough. But the good news is that every other AMEB music syllabus does have a CoP option!
What are some of the other things that make CoP different to Grade exams?
This can vary between syllabuses, for example, Singing Candidates must perform the whole program from memory (except cantatas and oratorios). More broadly, the General Knowledge tests are a little more advanced (again helping to bridge the transition to Diplomas), such as being able to describe other movements in a work where only one is performed, and knowledge of the composer's other works and musical influences.
The exam length is around 45 minutes but the program expectations are longer, and the performance constitutes the largest portion of the exam. Be sure to check those timing requirements as the program must fit within the minimum and maximum time allocated (including appropriate gaps between pieces). Some syllabuses require a program drawn entirely from the Lists whereas others include Own Choice options. We always recommend preparing for your exam in consultation with the current year's Syllabus.
Are there any corequisites for the exam?
Yes. You'll need to have obtained a pass in Grade 4 theory (or equivalent) to achieve the qualification. But don't forget that you can complete this at any time, and in any order. Grade 4 is also the corequisite for Grade 8 practical exams so, if you've already achieved that qualification, you won't need to do any additional theory for the CoP.
We also have a recommendation (although not a requirement) that you've achieved your Grade 8 practical exam before attempting the CoP. Similarly, the CoP is recommended for anyone wanting to do their AMusA.
There are no minimum ages for the CoP, however there is a recommended minimum age of 19 for Singing Candidates in consideration of both the maturity of the voice and the individual.

Can I get TCE bonus points for a CoP exam?
Yes you can! And that goes for any AMEB syllabus. In fact, all practical exams are eligible for TCE bonus points from Grade 4 onwards, as well as Theory Grade 2+.
