What's in the syllabus?
You'll be learning all about the gear and tech that goes into producing music. Think microphones, cables, mixing desks, instruments, and more. The books include audio material to help you develop your listening skills, so that you can identify musical basics by ear, such as pitch, rhythm, instruments, musical styles, and effects. This all helps you to build a solid understanding of how to use sounds to create the best mix. From teh earliest grades, you'll be using a DAW - Digital Audio Workstation - of your choice, taking what you've learnt and applying it to the types of situations that you'd be working on as a music producer.
What do I need to do for the exam?
Your Coursework Task is outlined in your Grade book, and you complete that ahead of your exam. It forms the largest portion of the assessment and you upload it as a portion of your assessment. In the task, you're presented with a situation for which you must demonstrate an appropriate technique to resolve the scenario. The online exam includes a listening test and a theory component where you'll demonstrate your knowledge of music production terminology and sound and audio fundamentals.
What if I want to specialise in an area?
From Grade 6 and up, you get to choose! You can tailor your learning to your suit your interests with specialist areas including audio production, electronic music production, and sound for media. In the earlier Grades, the material is more generalist to set you up with a broad range of knowledge and skills to support you in whichever pathway you want to pursue.
What software do I need to use?
Any! The syllabus is super flexible and accessible. It recognises that we all come from a range of backgrounds, abilities, and experience, so the exams are suitable for all music production software including freely available DAWs.
What resources are available?
The syllabus itself is free to download and provides all the information you need. To start learning, get hold of the Coursework Edition book for your Grade. Can I get TCE bonus points for a Music Production exam?
Yes you can! And, because it's categorised as a "theoretical exam", you can earn yourself points for any Music Production exam from Grade 2 upwards, just like all of our theory exams. As it happens, all practical exams are also eligible for TCE bonus points from Grade 4 onwards.
How does the online exam platform work?
Once you have an exam time teed up, you'll be provided with access instructions. During the exam, you'll upload your Coursework Task, and be required to answer the questions relating to aural and theory. We have some great guidance for Candidates here.
When can I do a Music Production exam?
Almost any time! Exams are done online at flexible times but an invigilator needs to be assigned to monitor you remotely while you do the exam. Please plan at least six weeks ahead so you can get the date and time that suits you. But there's still a lot of flexibility - invigilators are available from 9am to late in the evening every week day.
