Cradle Coast campus

Welcome to Country delivered by Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer Uncle Beau Murray.

Located at the waterfront setting of West Park in pataway/Burnie, the Cradle Coast campus is a unique place of learning where everyone is welcome. Here you can be part of a shared and vibrant community precinct offering educational, cultural and recreational experiences. Watch whales from your classroom, discover a colony of the world’s smallest penguins nearby, or enjoy a swim at the neighbouring West Beach between classes.

We offer modern, immersive learning environments and spaces for studying and socialising both indoors and out. Student accommodation is located on-site along with Campus Cafe, which serves a variety of food and beverage options. A short walk along the coastal boardwalk will lead you to our Unigym and Burnie’s CBD. We also have end-of-trip facilities for anyone coming to campus on foot, scooter or bike.

The campus – known as the Field Building – is distinctive to the Cradle Coast region and was shaped by the community it serves. The Domestic Arts Building - the last surviving structure from the original Burnie High School – lives on as a feature of the campus, honouring the site’s educational past while being a central part of its exciting future.

The campus was opened in 2021 and made possible by contributions from Local, State and Federal Governments and the University.

At our West Park apartments, you can find yourself living steps away from our new Cradle Coast campus.

These apartments fall under the National Rental Affordability Scheme. This gives you access to the best of Burnie on a student's budget.

Services and facilities

Our purpose-built teaching and learning facilities are inclusive and accessible with a range of amenities and resources, both on-site and nearby. All University of Tasmania campuses are now fully smoke-free.

  • Campus Cafe - The Campus Cafe is open to the community. Enjoy Leaping Goat coffee, along with tasty, home-cooked light food options. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating available. Enter via the eastern building entrance (near the public railway path and Little Penguin Observation Centre). The Campus Cafe also provides catering for events and functions on campus.

There are a number of sustainable food-related initiatives happening on campus, including, but not limited to, food gardens. In the North, these include:

TUSA Food Hubs are across all University of Tasmania campuses providing free fruit, vegetables, bread and frozen meals. With the option to purchase pantry staples for 40-50% less than supermarkets. TUSA's broader Food Security Program offers the Food Education Program at Burnie campus in semester 1 and 2. For more updates, follow TUSA Food Hub on Facebook.

  • You’ll find our Unigym at the Burnie Surf Life Saving Club nearby, where you’ll have access to a small boutique weights and cardio area and group fitness classes. Limited memberships are available. Please email burnie.sport@utas.edu.au for more information.
  • Discounted memberships are also on offer for students at Anytime Fitness.

Our Cradle Coast campus library is open to the community. It has a range of print and electronic resources to help with your studies, as well as a 24/7 returns point. Please check the current Library opening hours.

You are welcome to feed your child wherever you feel comfortable on campus. In addition, facilities are available for staff and students who need a private space to breastfeed/express milk.
