The Master of Education (Science Education) is designed to meet the needs of experienced educators seeking professional learning, personal enquiry and intellectual engagement within the specialist area of Science Education.

Graduates of the Master of Education (Science Education) AQF9 will be able to:

  1. Explain the nature and process of Science and Mathematics, and the values and ethical principles that underpin them.
  2. Discuss the breadth of Science and Mathematics, their role and relevance in society and how they influence and are influenced by other fields.
  3. Integrate educational theory, research evidence and analysis skills with Science and/or Mathematics content and Pedagogical Content Knowledge, and professional standards.
  4. Critically reflect on and evaluate scholarly literature and Science and Mathematics teaching practice, in response to learner needs and educational context.
  5. Plan, implement, evaluate and communicate the outcomes of a research project, theoretical investigation, or professional enquiry initiative in Science and/or Mathematics education.
  6. Communicate professionally and effectively about Science and Mathematics education across diverse settings to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Entry requirements

Students are required to hold an initial teacher education qualification (e.g. Bachelor of Education; Master of Teaching). In addition, they are required to have successfully completed the following pre-requisite units at TQA level 3/TASC level 4 or equivalent:

  • Mathematics (MTM415117)
  • Chemistry (CHM415115)
  • Physics (PHYS415115)

If they have not completed these unit(s), the following foundations units will be required study:

  • Mathematics Foundation Unit: KMA003.
  • Chemistry Foundation Unit (if undertaking the Chemistry specialisation): KRA001.
  • Physics Foundation Unit (if undertaking the Physics specialisation): KYA004.

Foundation units are completed as standalone units - students register to be enrolled in the foundation units online at Foundation and Supported Studies Units.

Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Education (Science Education) can articulate into this course.

Students are able to exit from this course with either a Graduate Certificate in Education (Science Education), or a Bachelor of Education with Professional Honours (Science Education).

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

Domestic students enrolled in certain postgraduate coursework programs may not be eligible for student payments through Youth Allowance and Austudy. Visit the Department of Social Services website to find out more about eligibility for Centrelink support and the list of eligible courses
