Duration

Minimum 4 Years, up to a maximum of 9 Years

Duration

Duration refers to the minimum and maximum amounts of time in which this course can be completed. It will be affected by whether you choose to study full or part time, noting that some programs are only available part time.

Location

This course may not be available to international students. Please see the list of distance courses (i.e. online and taken outside Australia) that are offered to international students

(Integrated program) This on-campus honours course is offered at Hobart on a full-time basis. It is designed to be taken by students enrolled in the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) as an overload during Year 4 of the course.

While all students in the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours graduate with an honours degree, applied honours does not serve as a pre-requisite to a Research Higher Degree program (e.g. PhD).

Students who wish to enrol in a PhD in the future should consider the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B). In this program, they will design and conduct an individual project under the supervision of a team of experienced researchers. They will submit a research thesis, which is required for entry into a Research Higher Degree program.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) enhances career opportunities and is the usual prerequisite for further study for a research higher degree (Master of Pharmacy or Doctor of Philosophy). Research Higher Degrees are generally expected for positions in the pharmaceutical industry, academia or government regulatory agencies.

Honours consists of a major research project, which is planned and commenced in third year and carried out in fourth year as an overload in the units CSA433 and CSA434 Pharmacy Honours. It is a significant time commitment in addition to standard Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) units and will not be suitable for all students with the necessary entry prerequisites. Students are expected to spend considerable time on their research projects outside Semesters 1 and 2 of the academic year.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) aims to provide experience and training in research in pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical science or pharmacology. This overall objective is served by the following goals:

  • To extend knowledge and understanding in specific topics of interest in pharmacy and related sciences,
  • To improve skills in critically reading the literature and communicating effectively in science,
  • To learn particular research methods and techniques,
  • To develop the ability to plan and carry out a research project, and to prepare a thesis on the results.

All students enrolling in College of Health & Medicine programs which include a professional experience placement component, laboratory and/or field activity are required to establish and maintain their capacity to practice safely via Safety in Practice Requirements compliance documentation.

Please see the Entry Requirements section for further details.

Career outcomes

Honours students specialise in a particular field of study and at the same time are exposed to a range of opportunities for undertaking higher degrees and following careers in pharmacy practice or the pharmaceutical sciences. Choice of a particular Honours research topic does not mean that a student undertaking further studies (e.g. Masters or PhD) is required to continue in the same project area.

As a pharmacy graduate, the development of the profession of pharmacy over time will largely be determined by the health care roles and skills performed by pharmacists such as yourself and your colleagues. To enable pharmacy to continue to be a profession with value and standing within the community, best practice facilitated by research is paramount.

Professional Recognition

The Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) will enhance your career opportunities and is the usual prerequisite for further study for a research higher degree (Master of Pharmacy or Doctor of Philosophy). Research Higher Degrees are generally expected for positions in the pharmaceutical industry, academia or government regulatory agencies.

Course structure

The individual research project component of the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) is completed as an overload in Year 4 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) program. The schedules of the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) and the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) are identical from Years 1 to 3. In Year 4 Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) students enrol in CSA433 and CSA434 Pharmacy Honours in addition to the standard Year 4 units

Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) students will be selected at the beginning of third year from amongst Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) students achieving at least a credit average, which they will be required to maintain in the honours program. Students who meet the entry requirements and choose to undertake honours will be enrolled in Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) at the beginning of Year 4 and will undertake the additional honours units as an overload.

Honours students will develop their individual research projects during Year 3 of the program, and will then conduct their project during Year 4 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B).
