Progress from entry level practitioner to beginning independent practitioner. Build knowledge and skills to practice without supervision and provide leadership to others in the Paramedicine team.
Enhance your clinical decision-making and diagnostic reasoning, evidence-based paramedic professional practice and build on the learning undertaken during the internship.
Course objectives
Throughout Australia, Paramedicine degree graduates are required to complete an internship with a recognised state based emergency ambulance service, prior to working independently. The Bachelor of Paramedicine with Clinical Honours recognises the depth of learning during the internship and provides paramedic interns with a pathway to transition from novice practitioner to independence in their professional practice.
The course will enable students to:
- Demonstrate development in their role as an entry level paramedic
- Engage in ongoing critical reflection as a means of continuing professional development and lifelong learning.
- Demonstrate paramedic clinical skills and knowledge in an integrated manner beyond entry level competencies.
- Become immersed in the professional practice environment of Paramedicine through an evidence based approach.
- Develop leadership and knowledge in preparation for independent practice
Practical experience
Safety in Practice Compliance
All students enrolling in Faculty of Health programs which include a professional experience placement component, laboratory and/or field activity are required to establish and maintain their capacity to practice safely via Safety in Practice Requirements compliance documentation.
This includes completing/providing:
- national criminal history check;
- working with children registration;
- medical, physical and psychological capacity to safely undertake the Faculty of Health Mandatory Functional Requirements (PDF 592.1KB); and
- infectious disease and immunisation status.
The Faculty assesses student compliance in accordance with the Safety in Practice Compliance and Risk Assessment Procedure (PDF 654.0KB). Without this documentation, students may be excluded from participating in their course.
Students must submit documentation complying with the Safety in Practice Requirements before:
- semester one census date annually; or
- in case of late enrolment, prior to beginning study.
The exceptions are the Working with Children Registration and Immunisation Record Card check, which must be completed 4 weeks prior to first PEP.
Career outcomes
Graduates of this program will be able to demonstrate progression of their career beyond their initial paramedic degree program, enabling them to demonstrate a commitment to their professional development and associated improvement in their merit standing for competitive career entry.
Graduates of this program will hold advanced standing towards their progression to postgraduate programs in Paramedicine.
Professional Recognition
There is no current national regulatory framework for paramedics, graduates will be eligible for admission as members of the professional bodies, Paramedics Australasia and the Australian and New Zealand College of Paramedicine.
Further study opportunities
This course provides an excellent foundation if you are aiming to enter postgraduate study in paramedicine. The University's School of Medicine offers the Advanced Paramedicine (Specialisation) postgraduate program.
