The Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) provides graduates with advanced skills and knowledge in the collection, analysis and translation of scientific information for real world outcomes. Specialisation options are available in one of four major streams: FISHERIES MANAGEMENT, AQUACULTURE, MARINE CONSERVATION and AQUATIC ANIMAL HEALTH. Graduates are well positioned to contribute in areas of marine resource and environmental management, science policy, and technical management across a range of marine and maritime industries.

Commencing with development of skills and knowledge via eight coursework units, this course concludes by exposing students to independent, research-based study with a one semester (or equivalent) research project. The supervised project refines students' skills and knowledge in knowledge and data integration, synthesis and critiquing skills.

Career outcomes

Successful completion of this degree will have developed leadership, and management level skills & knowledge for employment across marine/maritime sectors including conservation and environmental management, fisheries and aquaculture production and post-harvest, the tourism industry, shipping and offshore industries, non-governmental organisations and all levels of government from local to global. Graduates of this degree are well suited to leadership and management roles in industrial, governmental, and non-governmental regulatory and policy positions.

Professional Recognition

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) has accredited this degree as meeting the further learning requirements, in full, for registration as a Chartered Scientist and Chartered Marine Scientist.

Course structure

The first eight units of the Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) (J7T) are identical in structure to the Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Environment) (J6T). Students complete 6 discipline units from their major specialisation and 2 approved units according to the respective major schedule (Schedules A to D).

A further practicum component of 5 days work experience (a total of 15 days) is required to complete the requirements of the Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment).

On successful completion of the coursework units, students enrol in the 0.5yr research project (dissertation) typically involving analysis, evaluation and synthesis of pre-existing data or information. Learning outcomes of the research project are assessed via submission of a dissertation.

Students enrolling directly into the Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) may exit the course at the following points with the relevant award:

Complete 4 x 12.5% weighted units, plus 5 days practicum and exit with Graduate Certificate of Applied Science (Marine Environment).

Complete 8 x 12.5% weighted units, plus 10 days practicum and exit with Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Environment).

Please Note: Candidates progressing to, or enrolled in, the Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) or Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) with Honours require either Quantitative Methods or Data Analysis and Presentation unless they can demonstrate a sufficient level of expertise in Biostatistics in which case they can choose from the list of electives.
