Virtual Overseas Experiences

There are three types of Virtual Experiences currently available to UTAS students;

  1. College-led programs funded through the New Colombo Plan (NCP) Mobility Program.
  2. Virtual Short Term Programs/ Semester based program through a partner university (Summer/Winter semester)
  3. Virtual Short Term Programs/ Semester based program through a Third Party Provider OR Partner University.

The Student Mobility Office will be running information sessions throughout the semester, to make it easier for you to access information.  All you need to do is to check out our Facebook page (UTAS Student Mobility) and join the conversation!

These programs are run by UTAS Staff to help students combine travel, study and cultural immersion

Duration:

  • 2 - 6 Weeks

Destinations:

  • Indo-Pacific Region (i,e China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Japan, Vietnam and more!)

How much credit can you receive:

  • 12.5% Credit Points (1x Unit = ~12.5% Credit Points)

Who can apply:

  • Domestic students / Self funded International students.

Grant Funding:

  • Available for Domestic Students ONLY
  • NCP Mobility Grant Funding for eligible students ranges from $2000 - $7000AUD

a) be an Australian citizen
b) not a citizen or permanent resident of a Host Location in which the above program will run
c) currently enrolled at UTAS in a Bachelor Degree, Bachelor Honours Degree or concurrent Diploma.
e) be aged between 18 and 28 inclusive at the commencement of the Mobility Project 
f) not be an employee of the branch of DFAT that administers the NCP
g) not have received NCP funding to support a virtual experience previously


*Please ensure you meet ALL eligibility criteria and have at least one elective remaining in your degree before expressing interest.

The Hacker Exchange (HEX)

Our partner organisation CISaustralia is currently offering a number of online internships.

Placements are available for all study areas (excluding engineering) and are unique and customizable to each individual student based on their interests and career aspirations.

Virtual Internship in the USA

Through this internship, you will gain professional experience and build your resume while working remotely on projects and tasks that add value to your company or organisation. This experience will be project-based, with either one larger project over the course of the internship or several smaller ongoing assignments.

Please note that this unit has previously been approved as a 12.5% breadth unit under the Bachelor of Business & Bachelor of Economics.

  • Program fee: $1,799 + $95 AUD application fee for 4, 6 or 8 weeks (>8 weeks has an additional $44AUD fee per week)

Virtual Internship in Spain
  • Program fee: $1,999 + $95 AUD application fee for 6 weeks
  • Program dates:
    • 7th June - 16th July 2021 (6 weeks)
    • 7th September - 15th October 2021 (6 weeks)
Virtual Internship in South Africa

Virtual Internship in South Africa program is perfect for students who want to gain professional experience in their chosen field, work with an intercultural team at an international company, connect with South African culture and who are looking for a lower cost (and environmentally friendly!) program option.

  • Program fee: $2,099 + $95 AUD application fee for 4, 6 or 8 weeks (>8 weeks has an additional $44AUD fee per week)
  • Placements start on the first Monday of each month
Virtual Internship in China

Through this program, you can expect to gain practical skills in your area of study and really boost your resume with work experience at a company based in China or Hong Kong. This program is perfect for students who want to gain professional experience, work with an intercultural team, connect with Chinese or Hongkongers culture and who are looking for a lower cost (and environmentally friendly!) program option.

  • Program fee: $2,199 + $95 AUD application fee for 4, 6 or 8 weeks (>8 weeks has an additional $44AUD fee per week)
  • Placements start on the first Monday of each month
Virtual Internship in Japan
  • Program fees: (all +$95 application fee)
    • 4 weeks – $1,899 AUD
    • 6 weeks – $1,999 AUD
    • 8 weeks – $2,099 AUD
    • 10 weeks – $2,199 AUD
    • 12 weeks – $2,299 AUD
  • Placements start on the first Monday of each month

Please note that you will need to receive course approval via your college if you wish to receive credit for participating in a virtual internship

The Australian Consortium of In Country Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) will be running Virtual Internships in Indonesia for the duration of 2021.

With New Colombo Plan (NCP) funding now available for students undertaking virtual international experiences, ACICIS has received approval to use current NCP mobility grants ($3,000 per student) for the following programs, delivered virtually.
