Around 800 high school students experienced real-world professional learning opportunities in Launceston last week.
Creating My Career is a partnership between the University of Tasmania, the Department of Education and TasTAFE, with the support of Rotary Tasmania.
The annual initiative allows the next generation to explore a number of professions through participation in hands-on activities across several sectors.
On Friday, 8 June, Year 9 students selected a ‘career cluster’ of their choice, then took an in-depth look at its associated occupations.
Representatives from the University, TasTAFE and industry led interactive sessions that included gaming, the construction of model furniture and buildings, and the creation of ceramics.
Participants also crafted toolboxes, engineered bridges, tried their hand at finger plastering, practised CPR, took blood pressure and learned culinary knife skills.
Aside from helping them prepare for future employment, the event also provided students with guidance on choosing the best future study options.
Brett Williams, Project Manager for the University’s Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Quality and Schools Engagement), said Creating My Career provided students with a unique learning opportunity.
"This was a fantastic opportunity for the University to work collaboratively with the Department of Education, TasTAFE and Rotary Tasmania to provide students with a broad overview about their future education and training options," Mr Williams said.
"Students enjoyed the day and seemed to get a lot out of it - in particular the hands-on activities which provided them with a fun and interactive way to engage with learning."
This year’s Launceston clusters were Agri-business, Aquaculture, Architecture, Arts and Design, Business, Building and Construction, Community and Children Services, Defence Force, Digital Technologies, Engineering, Medicine and Nursing/Allied Health, Sport and Fitness and Tourism, Cookery and Guiding.
Creating My Career has already been held in Burnie, attracting around 500 students.
It will next be presented in Hobart during August.
