Why Tasmania is the best place to do your PhD

Coffee, culture, and an outstanding university. Tassie has it all.

1. We are the literal gateway to the Antarctic

If you want to study the marine sciences, the University of Tasmania is THE place to be. Our world-leading Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies has a huge range of amazing scientists conducting outstanding research, from here to Antarctica. You could even have the chance to head there yourself for your research! We recently ranked in the top ten in the world in three key subjects: Marine and Freshwater Biology, Fisheries and Oceanography (Centre for World University Rankings by Subject 2017).

2. We have the BEST weekend getaways

If you drive for an hour, you’re in some of the world’s most beautiful, remote wilderness. PhD? What PhD? Check out Cradle Mountain, Bruny Island, or maybe the Bay of Fires, all astonishingly instagrammable and Snapchat-ready. You’ll be able to free your mind and zone out in the gorgeous outback, and return to your desk refreshed, renewed, and ready to create brilliance! For inspiration, check out our Instagram.

3. Every year we get crazy with MOFO

Did you know Tassie has more artists than any other capital in Australia? (Well that’s what we’ve heard.) Tasmania goes wild at the annual Dark Mofo arts festival, which draws artists and guests from all over the world. And if you’re one of our creative types studying here, there could be a role for YOU at this wonderfully weird winter festival. With our new creative industries and performing arts project, the Hedberg, and the ever-present influence of the world’s coolest museum, MONA, Tasmania is the best place to study if you’ve got a creative streak. Writer, painter, musician, filmmaker, or poet, we’ve got something for you.

4. Tasmania is so much cooler now (seriously)

We have cafes and boutiques to rival even the hippest Melbourne and Sydney inner city streets. Our coffee is superb, and best of all, there’s no queues to get into our cafes and restaurants. Just turn up with your laptop, your notes, or your crew, and settle in for a caffeine-fuelled super study session in a serene yet hip environment. And after that, you might like to wander through one of our many weekend markets for vintage clothes, fresh locally grown veggies, or some divine pastries.

5. Our reputation and our research are epic

Our research has massive, world-wide impact. Did you know that a major breakthrough in the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome was made by researchers at our Menzies Institute for Medical Research? And the amazing Tasmanian Devil transmissible cancer research you see in the news all the time? Those research leaders are based here. We also have Australia’s leading young economist teaching here, and some of the most well-known scientists in the world.

Most importantly, we will give you the expertise, support, and drive to complete your PhD and become the best Doctor you can be. So what are you waiting for? Become an expert, in our beautiful state.
