Launceston Community Engagement

Home

Community engagement has many meanings

For UTAS at Launceston, Community Engagement is about developing and strengthening links between UTAS and the environment in which it operates and the communities it serves. While UTAS is committed to its core roles of education and research it recognises the importance of harnessing community expertise to achieve mutual benefits and build strategic partnerships that contribute to community development, prosperity and social well being.

In addition to developing partnerships that enhance the learning opportunities for potential and existing students, UTAS, through effective engagement, aims to provide leadership and support for initiatives that fulfil the mutual needs of UTAS and its numerous communities. UTAS aims to improve the way it interacts with the community and stakeholders.
UTAS at Launceston significantly impacts the economic, social and cultural environment of northern Tasmania.

UTAS delivers a diverse range of tertiary programs to over 5000 students, conducts vital research and adds capacity and capability to the region.  With over 800 staff, UTAS is a major employer that injects millions of dollars into the regional economy.

The Large Hadron Collider: Revealing the Fundamental Nature of Our World
15th Feb 2012 5:30pm

Venue: Vos Construction-Rory Spence Lecture Theatre, School of Architecture & Design, Inveresk campus

Professor Allan Clark, a graduate of UTAS, is the Director of the Department of Particle Physics at the University of Geneva and a Fellow at CERN, the home of the LHC

“The Large Hadron Collider: Revealing the Fundamental Nature of Our World”

In a 27 kilometre-long circular tunnel beneath the Franco-Swiss border sits the world’s largest physics experiment: the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC. This experiment aims to uncover some of the remaining secrets of our Universe, illuminating the nature of the fundamental forces and particles that make up our world. This talk will outline the Standard Model, currently our best physical theory of matter and forces, and then describe some of the first physics results from colliding protons close to the speed of light inside the Large Hadron Collider. For more information see the flyer.

Theatre Fest
26th Feb 2012 10:00am-4:00pm
In conjunction with local performance companies from Launceston and surroundings, The School of Visual and Performing Arts are hosting an expo entitled Theatre Fest on Sunday the 26th of February 2012 at The Annexe Theatre, Inveresk, between 10AM-4PM.

Theatre Fest 2012 is an opportunity for all Northern Tasmania performing arts troupes to promote their annual program and celebrate their track record (Launceston Players  - 85 years, Launceston Musical Society – 30 years, CentrStage 20 years, plus several others - a plethora of long-life arts associations).

The project unites local theatre troupes through their mutual purpose of generating new audiences, engaging those who may not realize the benefits of community theatre involvement and ensuring audiences witness local community events as being important, vital, potent and worthy of marking our identity. And most of importantly to demonstrate that diverse companies can create together and celebrate positive community attitude.

You can win theatre tickets to loads of shows and find out about the local theatre and community arts scene, musical theatre, upcoming shows, auditions, how to get involved both on & offstage, acting, singing, dancing, set design and much more.
