The latest in the suite of Performance Arts Awards (PAA) syllabuses is here: Public Speaking.
The syllabus is designed to support students to develop confidence in speaking publicly. It's designed to be engaging for all ages with a wide diversity of material that can be drawn from speeches, poems, raps, tongue twisters, stories, and even original material.
The syllabus is designed to develop skills such as:
- Understanding the techniques required for preparation of material for presentations
- Using the vocal and physical skills required for effective public speaking
- Communicating effectively with an imagined audience
And, depending on whether you do a face-to-face or video (Recorded Digital) exam, students develop the ability to engage in conversation appropriately, or convey their own ideas and opinions to camera appropriately and effectively.

Exams are available from Premiere to Grade 8 to suit beginners through to more advanced. You can also earn yourself a Rockschool Diploma with Public Speaking as your specialty.
What resources are available?
The UK Rockschool website has lots of resources for all syllabuses and the majority are free to access. For Public Speaking, you can view exemplars of selected grades to get an idea of what's in store. These examples are also accompanied by a brief overview of the assessment and the result that would have been awarded. The website also provides a break down of things like regulations and how visual aids can be used.
How is it different to the other speech syllabuses?
There's a bit of overlap with our AMEB Voice and Communication syllabus in that both aim to develop a strong oral presentation and the ability to communicate with the audience. Public Speaking exams are more stand-and-deliver style with the emphasis being on the delivery of the speech, whereas the Voice and Communication includes a lot more conversation with the Examiner and focusses more on the effectiveness of the communication and vocal techniques to achieve that. Can I get TCE bonus points for a Public Speaking exam?
Yes you can! And that goes for any AMEB exam, including all Rockschool and PAA syllabuses. In fact, all practical exams are eligible for TCE bonus points from Grade 4 onwards, as well as Theory Grade 2+.
