Develop the skills to perform with confidence, no matter what scenario you find yourself in, with the Screen Acting Syllabus.
What will I learn?
You'll gain practical knowledge of, and experience in:
- key camera angles used in TV and film production
- performing from memory
- demonstrating your understanding of content and meaning of the material you're presenting
- using your face, body, and voice to respond to material
- rehearsal processes
- application of understanding of content, context, and role.
To help you learn all of these skills, you'll prepare material for the exam like mono/duologues and advertisements, as well as having the opportunity to write your own scrips for set scenes and scenarios.
Can I do my exam with a friend?
Yes you can! You can do your exam on your own, or in a team of two, however you must be taking the same Grade exam. You can even present duologues with them (in lieu of a monologue).
How is it different to the other acting syllabuses?
Screen Acting exams are only available as Recorded Video Exams, and not as face-to-face. This is to mirror the industry that you're learning about. There's a bit of overlap with many of the other syllabuses due to the acting aspect, however this Syllabus focusses squarely on applying your acting techniques to the screen. If you're wanting to step up acting game, check out Stageschool Acting, AMEB Drama and Communication, or AMEB Speech and Performance Syllabuses. If you want to expand your vocal skills or strengthen your ability to communicate and convey a message, take a look at AMEB Voice and Communication or Stageschool Public Speaking exams. We also have the AMEB Speech and Performance Theory to give you all the theoretical knowledge to support those practical skills. If you're interested in those, head to our Speech and Drama and Stageschool pages for more details.
What resources are available?
The UK Rockschool website has lots of resources for all syllabuses and the majority are free to access. For Screen Acting, there are walkthroughs and tips on filming (in addition to the information in the syllabus), as well as explanations of camera shots and frames. you can view exemplars of selected grades to get an idea of what's in store. In addition to the syllabus itself, more free downloads include: Teacher Guidance & Repertoire Suggestions; Exam Procedure & Filming Guidance; Commercials Scripts (for Grades 7 and 8); and a Recorded Digital Exam Guide. And don't forget your cheer squad - you're allowed to get someone else to operate your camera (including camera phones).
Can I get TCE bonus points for a Screen Acting exam?
Yes you can! And that goes for any AMEB exam, including all Rockschool and Stageschool syllabuses. In fact, all practical exams are eligible for TCE bonus points from Grade 4 onwards, as well as Theory Grade 2+.
When can I do a Screen Acting exam?
Any time! Stageschool exams are available year-round. And, because exams are all done via Video, you can record your work at your convenience. Head to SCORE to enrol today or contact our team in the AMEB Federal Office to have a chat.
