A young environment scholar with a background in ecology and politics has picked up this year’s Australian Council of Environmental Deans and Directors Scholars 2018 award.
University of Tasmania alumnus Peter Vaughan, 21, received the accolade at a ceremony held on the Sandy Bay campus.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Rufus Black presented the prestigious award to Peter, who recently graduated with a Bachelor of Natural Environment and Wilderness Studies.
The award recognises Peter’s outstanding performance and potential amongst undergraduates in Tasmania.
“Peter won the first-year prize for geography in 2015 before going on to score highly in units in law, zoology, history, politics and geography,” climate scientist Professor Matt King said.
Professor King is the University’s representative on the Australian Council of Environmental Deans and Directors.
“Scholars who can integrate knowledge across diverse areas will play an increasingly important role in tackling complex environmental issues,” he said.
Professor Black also presented prizes to Thomas Guy (WJ Gerlach Honours Scholarship), Emily Sheppard (Peter Scott Prize in second year geography), Alyce Hennesy (Peter Scott Prize in first year geography), Yahya Al Haifi (John M Harwin Memorial Prize) and Christopher Iseli (Leica Geosystems Prize and Esri Australia GIS Award).
