The Graduate Diploma in Music is offered by the Conservatorium of Music at Hobart. It can be completed in a minimum of two semesters full-time or a maximum of two years part-time.

The GradDipMus aims to provide a quality tertiary qualification at the postgraduate level in a professional coursework program. The program aims to provide students with professional skills as performers, composers or instrumental/vocal studio teachers, including advanced technical skills in their particular discipline; a comprehensive understanding of a wide range of repertoire and musical concepts; and the skills to conduct and appraise research critically.

Students will be required to think professionally about their work and to plan for their own continuing development.

Course structure

Students choose one of four streams, either Performance, Composition, Musicology or Orchestral and complete a total of 100% of units for the Graduate Diploma of Music comprising two compulsory core units (50%) and 4 electives (50%) according to the schedule for the selected stream.

Students may enrol in up to 25% undergraduate level units in the Graduate Diploma of Music (Specilisation), subject to approval from the Course Coordinator

Entry requirements

Students with an undergraduate music degree or equivalent accepted by the university will be accepted for university entrance into the program. Candidates who have been admitted to the university must also pass appropriate entrance examinations, auditions and interviews as deemed necessary by the Conservatorium.

Students who complete the requirements of the GradDipMus program may apply for the Master of Music Studies and receive up to 50% credit or apply for the Master of Music and receive upto 62.5% credit.

Students who terminate their studies after completing 50% of the coursework units (including one 25% required unit) are eligible to achieve the Graduate Certificate of Music.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

International students

2020 Total Course Fee (international students): $32,950 AUD*.

Course cost based on a rate of $32,950 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).

* Please note that this is an indicative fee only.

International students

International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the annual rate. International students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.
