The Master of Music Studies is offered by the Conservatorium of Music at Hobart. It can be completed in a minimum of three semesters (one calendar year) full-time or a maximum of three years part-time.

The Master of Music Studies aims to provide a quality tertiary qualification at the postgraduate level in a professional coursework program. The program aims to provide students with professional skills as performers, composers or instrumental/vocal studio teachers, including advanced technical skills in their particular discipline; a comprehensive understanding of a wide range of repertoire and musical concepts; and the skills to design, conduct and appraise research critically.


Students will be required to think professionally about their work and to plan for their own continuing development.

Course structure

These course rules and specifications apply to students commencing the course from 2014. For students who commenced prior to 2014, the applicable course rules are those from the year of commencement. i.e. students who commenced in 2012 should refer to the 2012 page.

Students choose one of four streams, either Performance, Composition, Orchestral Studies or Musicology, and complete a total of 150% of units for the Master of Music Studies comprising two compulsory core units (50%), four electives (50%) and a further 50% of units according to the schedule for the selected stream. NB: Students intending to apply for the PhD program must complete the 50% Major Research Project unit.

The complementary study unit required for Performance, Composition and Orchestral Studies streams must be a written project as approved by the course co-ordinator. Entry requirements

Students with an undergraduate music degree or equivalent accepted by the university will be accepted for university entrance into the program. Candidates who have been admitted to the university must also pass appropriate entrance examinations, auditions and interviews as deemed necessary by the Conservatorium.

Students entering the program who have an Honours degree in the appropriate discipline from the University of Tasmania will receive 50% credit including one major study unit and Music Research Methodology and one elective. Students with Honours degrees from other institutions or other postgraduate awards may apply for upto 50% credit.

Students who terminate their studies after completing 100% of the coursework units (including both required 25% major study units and the Music Research Methodology unit) are eligible to achieve the Graduate Diploma of Music (Specialisation). Students who terminate their studies after completing 50% of the coursework units (including one 25%required unit) are eligible to achieve the Graduate Certificate of Music (Specialisation).

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

Domestic students enrolled in certain postgraduate coursework programs may not be eligible for student payments through Youth Allowance and Austudy. Visit the Department of Social Services website to find out more about eligibility for Centrelink support and the list of eligible courses

International students

2020 Total Course Fee (international students): $ 56,072 AUD *.

Course cost based on a rate of $36,950 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).

International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the annual rate. International students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.
