With the exceptions of Child and Family Health Nursing and Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing all specialisations are offered completely online. In most specialisations, students must have access to clinical practice in the specialty area.
Please note that graduate programs are offered subject to student demand and the availability of School of Nursing resources.
Course objectives
The School of Nursing, in collaboration with cooperating Health Care Agencies, aims to create an educational environment which values critical, reflective thinking, life-long learning, acquisition of generic attributes and professional development.
While the Bachelor of Nursing Professional Honours specialties are diverse with course specific objectives, the generic program objectives are to:
- enable students to work as registered nurses in specialised practice settings;
- allow students to develop nursing knowledge and skills in their specialty;
- enhance students' advanced critical thinking and clinical decision making in their specialty nursing discipline;
- builds students' capacity to engage as clinical specialists through research and evidence based practice;
- encourage student interest and engagement in the professional growth of their discipline, and
- develop students' ability to communicate effectively with people from culturally diverse backgrounds.
Work placement
Career outcomes
Graduates are able to further their career development by progressing to a Master of Clinical Nursing or a research Master of Nursing.
Professional Recognition
The Bachelor of Nursing with Professional Honours (Specialty) will be given the same professional recognition from specialist colleges and other nursing organisations and bodies that the Graduate Certificate in Nursing and the Graduate Diploma of Nursing receive.

Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing
Students must carefully select their specialisation according to their scope of practice as the Semester 2 units under the Neonatal and Special Care of the Newborn specialisations are mutually exclusive. This means should you wish to complete Special Care of the Newborn and then complete Neonatal Intensive Care at a later date, you will need to redo the Semester 2 units and attend to the assessment tasks relevant to the individual specialty. You would not be permitted however to study the Neonatal Specialisation first and then return to complete the Special Care of the Newborn specialisation.

Special Care of the Newborn Nursing
Students must carefully select their specialisation according to their scope of practice as the Semester 2 units under the Neonatal and Special Care of the Newborn specialisations are mutually exclusive. This means should you wish to complete Special Care of the Newborn and then complete Neonatal Intensive Care at a later date, you will need to redo the Semester 2 units and attend to the assessment tasks relevant to the individual specialty. You would not be permitted however to study the Neonatal Specialisation first and then return to complete the Special Care of the Newborn specialisation.

Requirements
An applicant must:
[i] be a registered nurse in Australia, or
[ii] if an overseas applicant, have had his/her nursing qualifications assessed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and be eligible for registration in Australia, and normally have had at least six months of full-time experience in relevant nursing practice within the last two years (or equivalent);
[iii] hold an undergraduate degree in nursing with a grade point average of at least a credit (or equivalent); or
[iv] have qualifications or experience deemed to be the equivalent of one of the above.
Safety in Practice Requirement
All students enrolling in College of Health and Medicine programs which include a professional experience placement component, laboratory and/or field activity are required to establish and maintain their capacity to practice safely via Safety in Practice Requirements documentation.

Professional Experience Placement Requirements
Students enrolled in specialisations which include clinical placements must demonstrate compliance with the College of Health and Medicine and the School of Nursing policies relevant to workplace based learning. The Bachelor of Nursing with Professional Honours (Specialty) articulates directly with the Master of Clinical Nursing.
The research pathway in the Master of Clinical Nursing which articulates from the Bachelor of Nursing with Professional Honours (Specialty) has limited places. To enter the pathway, you must have confirmed your position with the Director of Postgraduate Nursing prior to completing year one of your specialist degree. Please contact melanie.greenwood@utas.edu.au to discuss further.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

International students
