IMAS is one of the top research facilities in the world. I doubt there is any other university in the world that offers a world class facility like this to normal undergraduates to study marine and Antarctic science.

Azan Abdulla, student
This course is in teach-out and is not accepting new admissions.

It has been replaced by a new state-wide P3L Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science.

This is the only Marine and Antarctic bachelor degree in Australia, located on the edge of one of the world's best natural laboratories, with access to industry-leading facilities at the Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies (IMAS) and internationally recognised experts to help you kick-start your career.

This degree gives you a broad foundation in the study of temperate marine, Antarctic and Southern Ocean science. We also offer in-depth specialist majors that other universities reserve for post graduate study. Your university learning experience goes beyond lectures, labs and tutorials with study trip units that take learning to the Southern Ocean.

You'll have the choice to study one of the following eight streams: Marine Biology, Marine and Antarctic Governance, Physical Oceanography, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, GIS and remote sensing and Modelling and technology. Each stream provides a two majors and an associated minor.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake study at any of our partner institutions across the globe and work with internationally recognised scientific organisations based in Tasmania.

The Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science is offered by IMAS (Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies) and is available at Hobart. The course provides specialist streams for students to pursue in-depth learning in a particular area, paired with broader marine and Antarctic units.

You'll have the choice to study one of the following eight streams: Marine Biology, Marine and Antarctic Governance, Physical Oceanography, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, GIS and remote sensing and Modelling and technology. Each stream provides a two majors and an associated minor.

This course is designed to prepare students for a meaningful scientific career in industry or as a researcher. The skills gained will assist graduates in contributing to world issues such as food security, climate change and marine stewardship.

Students will gain skills in data collection, analysis and presentation to interpret marine processes and patterns. You will be able to critically analyse and solve problems, communicate outcomes to a range of audiences and explain the role of marine and Antarctic science in society.

You will graduate with a depth and breadth of knowledge across biology, chemistry, physics, geology, oceanography and mathematics for marine and Antarctic environments.

Many graduates continue into postgraduate study and conduct research in IMAS' key research areas of oceanography and cryosphere, fisheries and aquaculture, ecology and biodiversity, climate change, oceans and Antarctic governance and ocean-earth systems.

Your university learning experience goes beyond lectures, labs and tutorials.

IMAS has strong relationships with international experts and industry-leading facilities including the Australian Antarctic Division, CSIRO, CCAMLR and Institut Polaire. Students have the opportunity for an industry placement or practical work project with these organisations, including coastal field trips to the Southern Ocean.

Group work, projects and field trips provide extra challenges and opportunities to work alongside world-class academics and researchers.

Overseas Exchange

Our international exchange program lets you take a semester of study at universities around the world, including partner institutions in Sweden, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, UK and the United States. At IMAS we also offer block taught units at universities globally.

Study Abroad Scholarships

The University actively encourages our students to extend their learning opportunities by undertaking international study exchange. To facilitate this, we offer a range of scholarships and financial assistance. For more info see the Student Exchange website.

Career outcomes

With an annual value to Australia of approximately $40 billion and growing, graduates from the University of Tasmania are highly sought-after in a range of fields including in marine and freshwater research, oceanography, fisheries and climate research, environmental conservation, environmental governance and management and policy.

The skills and knowledge you learn could see you have a real impact on practices, processes and policies on a local, national or worldwide scale.

Our degrees provide graduates with specialised skills and an educational experience centred on ecological sustainability. Once graduated, students are able to contribute to the sustainable management of the marine environment, thereby increasing the total quality of life as described in Australia's National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD).

We have graduates working across the world in a variety of positions and organisations.

Career opportunities (dependent on field of study):

  • Scientific Officer
  • Antarctic Researcher – Australian Antarctic Division
  • Coastal Community Engagement Officer
  • Marine Park Manager
  • Aquarium Manager

Further Study Opportunities

The specialist streams in this course provide a clear pathway for students who are interested in undertaking postgraduate study in their specialist area. IMAS is the perfect place to undertake further study, with supervisors who are international experts and further pathways to PhDs.

The Antarctic Gateway Partnership between the University of Tasmania, CSIRO and the Australian Antarctic Division employs PhD students, early-career researchers and technicians working with senior scientists at the largest Southern Hemisphere Antarctic and oceans research hub. This research further enhances Tasmania's reputation as a global leader in Antarctic and Southern Ocean science. It provides a gateway for Antarctic research, education, innovation and logistics, and their related careers.

Professional Recognition

Graduates with Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science can apply to become a Professional Member of the Australian Marine Sciences Association (ASMA), more membership information can be found on the ASMA website.
