Introduction
The Graduate Certificate in E-Health is offered by the University Department of Rural Health -- externally, using online teaching and learning technologies, over a minimum completion time of 1 year part time (over two semesters), and a maximum 2 years part time.
Admission & Prerequisites
The course is suitable for health professionals who wish to enhance their understanding and ability to work effectively with information and communication technologies. The course is also designed for graduates who wish to pursue a career as a health informatics specialist.
In order to qualify for admission to the Certificate or the Diploma courses, applicants should
- hold a three-year degree or a diploma with a major in a health related or communications technology area,
OR
- have experience and/or qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Director of the UDRH.
As all units in the course use online resources, students need to have regular access to email and the internet. A computer with the following minimum computer configuration is recommended:
- Intel Pentium, Power Mac or equivalent;
- 64MB RAM;
- 4Gb hard disk;
- CDROM;
- sound card;
- video display card capable of displaying more than 256 colours;
- Windows 98, Macintosh system 8.6, or later operating systems;
- 56K modem.
Course Objectives
The program has the following objectives:
- To produce graduates who understand information technology and advanced telecommunications technology.
- To create an awareness of the increasing role and potential of information technology and advanced telecommunications technology for effective and efficient health services, particularly for rural, remote and housebound consumers.
- To foster an awareness of the social, ethical and legal issues associated with the introduction and use of information technology and communications technology.
- To provide health professionals and others with the theoretical and practical knowledge which will enable them to take leading roles within the emerging field of Health Informatics.
Articulation to/from Course
On completion of the Certificate, students may be eligible to proceed to the
H6EGraduate Diploma. Students who have completed either the Certificate or Diploma program may be eligible to undertake a Master of E-Health (Health Informatics) program when it is introduced.
The programs do not articulate with any other program within the University.
