Bachelor of Agriculture with Honours (S4X)

• 1 Select and apply practical and theoretical techniques to conduct an independent and ethical research project
• 2 Design, implement and critically evaluate a scientific investigation to address a research question relevant to agriculture
• 3 Compile and communicate research findings, ideas and arguments to informed professional audiences, both orally and in a written thesis

Honours students undertake a substantial independent research project, gaining extensive hands-on experience throughout the year. Depending on the project, students may spend significant time in the field, laboratory or other research environments collecting data, conducting experiments, applying research techniques and analysing results to address real-world agricultural challenges.

Practical experience forms a major component of the honours year, with students immersed in research activities that develop technical, analytical and problem-solving skills. Projects are tailored to the research question being investigated and may involve field-based investigations, laboratory research, agricultural technologies, industry collaboration or data-driven analysis.

As part of the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA), students have access to specialist research facilities, teaching and research farms, and a multidisciplinary community of scientists, technical experts and industry-connected researchers. Working closely with supervisors and research teams, students gain valuable experience applying research methods in professional agricultural settings while developing project management, scientific inquiry and evidence-based decision-making skills.

Our ambassadors proudly represent the University throughout Tasmania in schools, at University and community events, and support a range of recruitment and engagement activities. Though the Student Ambassador Program or STEM Outreach Team you will have many opportunities for training and professional development, experience in real-world community engagement and outreach, networking, and public speaking, plus end up with a key point of distinction on your CV.

Exchange can allow you to have an affordable educational and cultural experience in a foreign country for a semester, or a full year. To facilitate this, we offer a range of scholarships and financial assistance. Work Integrated Learning

While the Bachelor of Agriculture with Honours does not include a formal industry placement requirement, many honours projects are developed in collaboration with industry partners or address real-world challenges facing the agricultural sector.

Students may have opportunities to engage with industry through project discussions, field activities, data collection, presentations and research partnerships, depending on the focus of their project.

Students who are already employed within the agricultural sector may also be able to explore honours research topics connected to their workplace or professional interests. Where the proposed project aligns with TIA's expertise, resources and research priorities, academic supervisors may work with students to develop and support these research opportunities.

Bachelor of Agriculture with Honours graduates are eligible for membership of the Ag Institute Australia.

Entrants to the degree of Bachelor of Agriculture with Honours will have qualified for admission to the BAgr or an appropriate Bachelor degree in Science or equivalent at an approved tertiary institution. Candidates would normally be expected to obtain at least a credit average in their final year undergraduate units.

Candidature will be subject to appropriate supervision being available for the thesis topic approved by the School and subject to satisfying the prerequisites required for the chosen field of study.

Admission to Honours courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects and the English language requirements to be eligible for an offer. Admission is conditional on research project and supervisor availability.

English Language Requirements

For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided. See the English Language Requirements page for more information.
