This four-year full-time or part-time equivalent course is offered on-campus in Hobart. Limited first year units are available at the Launceston and Cradle Coast campuses,  but students must transfer to Hobart to complete the combined degree.

In the Economics component of the degree, you choose a major in either Economic Foundations or Economic Analysis.

In the Science component of the degree you can choose from a range of fields of specialisation as follows:

Professional Recognition

There are no professional bodies in the economics discipline. While undertaking the Bachelor of Economics degree, students can apply to become special members of the Economics Society of Australia. See membership information.

For the BSc component, graduates are eligible for membership of a number of professional organisations, specific details are provided under individual discipline entries.

Course structure

In the Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Science you study 32 units (or the equivalent of 400 credit points) from the schedule.

Unit level requirements for the degree are: between 8-12 units at introductory level, 8-16 units at intermediate level and 8-16 units at advanced level.

The combined degree requirements consist of:

  • A major in each degree component of 8 units: 2 introductory, 2 intermediate and 4 advanced units
  • A minor in each degree component of 4 units: 2 introductory, 2 intermediate level units
  • Degree electives: 3 units in each degree component, 2 in each degree at introductory level and 2 in each degree  at intermediate or advanced level.

Bachelor of Economics

In the Bachelor of Economics component you choose from two majors, either Economic Analysis or Economic Foundations, enrol in the compulsory Economics minor and choose 3 degree electives and a breadth unit.

Bachelor of Science

In the Bachelor of Science component, you choose a major, a minor, 3 degree electives and a breadth unit. With the exception of Mathematics, a major and minor must be taken from different discipline areas.

Degree electives are normally chosen from intermediate and/or advanced level science units.  Please contact set.enquiries@utas.edu.au if you wish to undertake introductory degree electives.

Launceston students transfer to Hobart if they wish to continue studies in Chemistry and Mathematics after introductory level.

Science combined degree component

This major is aimed at people who enjoy applying mathematics to solve scientific problems that arise in modelling real-world effects. People with this training might work in industry, medical applications, finance, or go on to further study in the area.


If you select both a major and a minor in Mathematics, substitute KMA155 for KMA152 or KMA182, and substitute KMA153 for KMA154 or KMA184. KMA255 should be substitued for KMA252 if it is taken as part of another Mathematics major or minor.

International students must meet the Admission Requirements for International Students.

International students must provide an IELTS score with an overall Band of 6 and no band less than 5.5; or a TOEFL score of 550 with a Test of Written English score of no less than 4.5. The test must not be more than 24 months old.

Subject prerequisites also exist for each component of the BEc-BSc:

Bachelor of Science prerequisites

Minimum University entrance requirements apply. Students are encouraged to study some of the following TCE subjects: MTS315109 Mathematics Specialised; MTM315109 Mathematics Methods; MTA315109 Mathematics Applied; ITC315108 Computer Science; CHM315109 Chemistry; GGY5C Geography 5C; EVS315109 Environmental Science; PHY315109 Physics; BIO315109 Biology; PSC315109 Physical Sciences.

Please note that subject (unit) prerequisites apply to the study of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

Bachelor of Economics prerequisites

The BEc component of the degree has a subject prerequisite of Mathematics Applied TQA 3 (MTA315109) or an equivalent pre-tertiary or higher level mathematics subject. Applicants who do not have the mathematics prerequisite and who wish to enrol in the BEc-BSc should contact the TSBE Academic Administration Office on 1800 030 955 or enquiries@business.utas.edu.au concerning a pathway into this component of the combined degree. Students returning to study either after a long absence or new students who have the mathematics prerequisite but who lack confidence in their quantitative skills should enrol in UPP075 Bridging Maths, XAB090 Transition Maths or BEA109 Introduction to Quantitative Methods, or KMA003 Mathematics Foundation Unit before enrolling in BEA140 Quantitative Methods or BEA142 Quantitative Economic Analysis

International students who have the mathematics prerequisite but who lack confidence in their quantitative skills and who would like to undertake a mathematics bridging program may only take BEA109 Introduction to Quantitative Methods.

If you have completed an AQF-recognised Diploma or Advanced Diploma in a business related discipline from an Australian TAFE or other RTO may be eligible for advanced standing into the degree. Advanced standing for study already undertaken within another degree at UTAS, or at an Australian or overseas tertiary institution, may also be granted.

Depending on the course of study and the majors chosen, you may not be able to use all of the credit that has been granted, for example, credit for unspecified electives. Credit into the Bachelor of Science component is possible for studies completed in some TAFE diplomas and in other tertiary studies.

In the case of international students, credit for previous tertiary study will be determined on application and, if granted, included with your offer letter.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

Annual Tuition Fee is inclusive of the compulsory Student Services and Amenities (SSA) fee. The SSA fee for 2017 is $294 AUD.

International students

2017 Annual Tuition Fee (international students): $26,250 AUD*.
