This is one of four units in which students engage in guided development of ensemble performance skills, contextualised through the study of complementary areas such as historical knowledge, stylistic analysis and ancillary performance or compositional techniques.

This unit contextualises music of the past and present though the lens of the Baroque, Classicism, Formalism and Neoclassicism.

Teaching Pattern

1 hour weekly face-to-face contextual lecture, supported by 1-hour online study modules;
2 hrs weekly guided ensemble rehearsals/coaching/composition workshop;
4 x 1.5 hour performance-based workshops per semester


Level 200:Ensemble performance and/or composition component (55%);

Online quizzes (20%);
Written assignment/s (25%);
You must pass each of the two major components (practical and written) in order to pass the unit.
