Contemporary Art of the Asia-Pacific Region FST213

Note:

This unit is offered in alternate years only and subject to enrolment quota.

Introduction

This unit introduces students to the development of contemporary art within the Asia Pacific region over recent decades. It focuses on a range of critical debates including art and politics, art and religion, art of the diaspora, globalisation and national identity. These topics are explored in conjunction with exhibitions that have played a major role in promoting and fostering Asian art, including the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Brisbane) and others held in South-East Asia, Japan, China and the Indian sub-continent. Student learning is developed through a series of presentations, reading group sessions and curatorial exercises.
