Contemporary Representations of Gender HAF342

This unit is being phased out, no new enrolments are being taken.

How is gender represented and communicated through television, film, magazines, and other channels in popular culture? This unit explores different conceptions of representation, drawing on film theory, cultural studies, media studies, and contemporary gender theory. We will analyse the ways in which the gendered meanings of representations are produced, and how they are subject to change. Analyses will be focused primarily on contemporary Australian cultural artifacts, i.e., current Australian television series, news shows, films, etc.
