Multi-modal Freight Systems JNB362

This unit develops knowledge and capabilities in the complex multi-modal freight system. It focuses on the components of a multi-modal freight system, which are vital to the efficient operations of the system. These include the physical base of transport in one freight movement such as infrastructure; operations and players involved in the system; associated commercial services and costs; information technology for coordination; management control of the system such as benchmarking, safety and security; and legal aspects and liability. The unit also explores how an emerging issue, environmental sustainability, affects the operation and modal-choice decision in the system.  The concept of integration of multi-modal freight systems and strategies towards integration are also discussed in order to improve performance efficiency and effectiveness of the system.
