From David Bowie to Bruno Mars, Eurovision to K-Pop, Afro to Hip-Hop, are more rapid and fluid forms of global connectivity shaping our cultural identity, or do we make culture, identity, and meaning somehow through popular music?
This unit explores our shared humanity through the themes of ethnicity, gender, and Australian identity, as they are expressed and framed by popular musics. It recognises that changing political and economic orders across the world are challenging previously taken-for-granted definitions of identity and narratives of meaning.
This unit makes use of online audio-visual artefacts, discussion, and interviews, alongside more traditional academic sources. A wide choice of assessment questions along with flexibility in assessment submission style (eg. video report, event pitch, briefing paper, blog, conference programme). These provide for maximum alignment of student interest and learning and assessment tasks. This unit develops creative literacy and analytical skills through a unique multidisciplinary form of global inquiry.
