Geography of Australia's Asian Neighbours KGA202

Part of the Geography & Environmental Studies major, this interdisciplinary unit is also available as an elective for students with alternative first year backgrounds.  This unit will only go ahead once the quota of 15 students has been reached.

Australia's accelerating engagement with Asia requires a capacity to understand our northern neighbours, empathise with them, and relate to and work with them.In this unit you will have opportunities to understand the nature of the physical environment of selected parts of Asia and its complex connections with human activity. The unit focuses on Asian regions' historical geography, colonialism, armed conflict, demographic change, natural resource distribution and current environmental management and social justice concerns.Present-day development, ambitions, directions and tensions are explored by reference to the spatial and environmental dimensions of specific development issues. Among those issues are energy generation by means of river dams; logging; nature conservation; tourism; urbanisation; infrastructure development; environmental governance; and climate change. As the 'Asian Century' unfolds, the unit will assist students in their work to become global citizens and regional neighbours, and to build knowledge and understanding necessary for employment as technical specialists, aid workers, teachers and other professionals.
