The University of Tasmania Centre for Rural Health in conjunction with the Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre (OTARC), La Trobe University is pleased to present a FREE Workshop.

This free 3 hour training will equip early health and education professionals working with the 0-2 year old population with the necessary skills to carry out Social Attention and Communication Surveillance (SACS) and discuss their findings with families as part of routine care. The SACS approach is an evidenced based surveillance method that supports early childhood professionals to monitor infants and toddlers for atypical development through skilled observations to identify early indicators of Autism. The training will cover:
- Early development of Social Attention and Communication in typical development and key items for early indicators of Autism
- Development of Social Attention and Communication in Autism
- Monitoring Social Attention and Communication as part of routine developmental surveillance
- Discussing the SACS items with families and facilitating referrals of children at risk of developing Autism
This workshop will suit early childhood health professionals (Child health nurses, allied health and medical professionals) and early childhood education professionals (e.g., early childhood teachers) working with the 0-2 year old population wanting to improve their skills in identifying key indicators of Autism.
About the presenter
Dr Josephine Barbaro is Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre at La Trobe University, and the lead clinician in Australia's first 'Early Assessment Clinic' for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Dr Barbaro's research interests are in the early identification and diagnosis of ASD in infants and toddlers, and family health and well-being following a diagnosis. The Social Attention and Communication Surveillance (SACS) approach, developed during her PhD, has been translated and disseminated widely, both nationally and internationally. Dr Barbaro was the recipient of a prestigious Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in the Allied Health Sciences, and has won a number of awards, including the International Society for Autism Research Dissertation Award.
