Wicking dementia care students graduate in Sydney

The latest students to complete Dementia Care studies through the University of Tasmania's Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, recently graduated in Sydney.

The five students, three with associate degrees and two with diplomas in Dementia Care, were the first Wicking Centre graduates for 2016 -  joining a growing number of students eager to address the demands of dementia now and in the future.

The Wicking Centre, based within the University's Faculty of Health, has a growing Alumni from its Dementia Care courses comprising of 16 Associate Degree and 96 Diploma graduates.

Graduate Barbara Rennick, a registered nurse working in dementia training for staff, said completing Wicking's Associate Diploma in Dementia Care gave her invaluable knowledge and helped her implement changes in her workplace.

"The course that l completed was inspirational and filled with so much knowledge and practical learning," she said.

"I am now filled with the knowledge and understanding to teach and support the community at large about dementia, to change people's thinking and to improve the lives of people with dementia."

The Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre's degree programs are world-first offerings aimed at equipping graduates to improve the quality of life for people living with dementia.

The Wicking Centre is highly interdisciplinary and has major research programs on the care, cause and prevention of dementia.

In August this year, The Wicking Centre will also celebrate its first Bachelor graduates.

The Bachelor of Dementia Care is a fully online course available nationally and internationally to anyone looking to better understand and care for people living with dementia.
