It made “perfect sense” for Peter to study at the University when he weighed up his options.
“I did not believe that studying at a university outside of Tasmania would make me any better off. I figured that if there were prominent UTAS alumni, such as economist Saul Eslake, who were well regarded then there was probably nothing stopping me from achieving my career aspirations. "
This on-campus, 3-year full-time or 7-year part-time course is offered at the Hobart campus, with a limited number of first year units are also available at the Launceston and Cradle Coast Campuses.
Learning outcomes
CLO1 | Graduates will possess theoretical and practical knowledge of Economics, and the ability to use data to address economic problems. |
CLO2 | Communicate economic reasoning, present economic knowledge, ideas and empirical evidence both orally and in written form. |
CLO3 | Evaluate economic problems and assess policy issues, using basic economic techniques. |
CLO4 | Collaboratively interact with peers to reflect on the potential differential impacts of economic policies across local, national or international economies. |
CLO5 | Reflect on the ethical propositions in economics. |
Career outcomes
Good economic management helps improve the overall living standards of a society, so a Bachelor of Economics is a sought-after qualification, and highly respected by employers.
A depth of understanding in a particular discipline allows you to pursue a focused career, but an economics qualification also provides an excellent generalist degree for many graduate positions. Irrespective of your chosen career path a knowledge of economics gives you a competitive advantage.
As well as understanding the fundamentals of economics, you’ll develop workplace skills such as critical thinking, strategic analysis and measured decision-making.
As a Bachelor of Economics graduate, you will have access to a diverse range of career opportunities. These include:
- Administration
- Central banking
- Commercial consulting
- Commercial banking
- Local government
- Management
- Market research
- Merchant banking
- Political advisory and research roles
- Stockbroking
- Teaching
Professional Recognition
There are no professional bodies in the economics discipline. While undertaking the Bachelor of Economics degree, students can apply to become special members of the Economics Society of Australia.
Students completing a Bachelor of Economics with a Finance major meet the academic entry requirements to seek membership of the Australian Institute of Banking and Finance.
Course structure
The Bachelor of Economics is designed to produce graduates with a detailed understanding of how decisions are made by individuals, firms, and governments through analysis of micro and macro economic environments for business and the broader community.
In choosing a Bachelor of Economics you can:
- Build a degree that is tailored specifically to your own interests and select your major from 3 different disciplinary areas: Economic Foundations, Economic Analysis or Environmental and Resource Economics
- Acquire multidisciplinary skills by choosing minors from outside the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics (TSBE).
- Enrich your degree through hands-on learning experiences: corporate internships, report writing, multidisciplinary teamwork, and the use of industry case studies in the classroom.
- Learn from leading experts whose links with industry, professional associations, other academics and government ensure that their teaching remains contemporary and relevant.

Entry requirements
Entry Requirements
We encourage you to apply for the courses you most want to study. If you’re not eligible to enter your chosen course right now, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best pathway option.
Enquire online for advice on the application process and the available pathways to study at UTAS.
Domestic applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years)
To be eligible for an offer, you must:
- Have an ATAR of 50 or above. This is the minimum ATAR needed for your application to be considered; and
- Have satisfactory performance in senior secondary or equivalent studies in Mathematics.
In 2019, the lowest ATAR to receive an offer into this course was 53.35. The lowest ATAR to receive an offer may change from year to year.
Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your study plan and subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.
All other domestic applicants
To be eligible for an offer, you must:
- Meet the University’s General Entry Requirements based on your prior studies and experience; and
- Have satisfactory performance in senior secondary or equivalent studies in Mathematics.
Subject prerequisites
Domestic students who have the mathematics prerequisite but lack confidence in their quantitative skills should complete BEA109 Introduction to Quantitative Methods (or an alternative UTAS foundation or preparatory unit option such as UPP075 Bridging Maths, XAB090 Transition Maths or KMA003 Mathematics Foundation Unit) before enrolling in the core Bachelor of Economics units BEA140 Quantitative Methods or BEA142 Quantitative Economic Analysis.
Special consideration
If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors for special consideration, including economic hardship, a serious medical condition or disability.
We can only approve applications for special consideration where we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course. Special consideration is not available for international applicants.
International applicants
Admissions information for international applicants, including English language requirements, is available from the International Future Students site. You can also enquire online to check your eligibility.
International students who have the mathematics prerequisite but lack confidence in their quantitative skills should complete BEA109 Introduction to Quantitative Methods before enrolling in the core Bachelor of Economics units BEA140 Quantitative Methods or BEA142 Quantitative Economic Analysis.
Credit transfer
TSBE offers direct credit for its awards. For example, a current TSBE student wishing to transfer to the BEc with credit and vice versa receives direct credit. Credit for study already undertaken within another degree at UTAS, or at an Australian or overseas tertiary institution, may also be granted.
Depending on the course of study and the majors chosen, students may not be able to use all of the credit that has been granted, for example, credit for unspecified electives.
The application form and more information about the TSBE's guidelines for credit are available at Credit for prior study.
In the case of international students, credit for previous tertiary study will be determined on application and, if granted, included with the Offer of Enrolment.
Detailed Admissions Information
Detailed admissions information and advice for all undergraduate courses, including comprehensive, course-level student profiles, is available from UTAS Admissions.
