Indigenous Australian Health and Well Being HAB213

This unit is being phased out, no new enrolments are being taken.

Available to Nursing and Health Science students as an elective.

Statistics generally indicate significant disparities between the health and well being of Indigenous people and the broader non-Indigenous population in Australia. This unit explores reasons for this situation, including a 'social determinants' approach examining socio-economic, cultural and political factors impacting upon the health status of Indigenous peoples. The unit examines 'pre-contact' Indigenous health in Australia and comparable non-Indigenous contexts, and considers the effectiveness of contemporary policies, programs and practices that aim to improve Indigenous health outcomes.
