The Master of Medical Research is a 2 year (4 semester) research-focused course offered in Hobart. It is designed to equip students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to enhance career opportunities within medical research industries, academic medical research or medical research regulatory organisations.

Graduates will have gained technical knowledge and skills applicable to medical research, and developed advanced skills in written and verbal scientific communication. Graduates will have advanced problem-solving skills and will have an understanding of the global, social and ethical context of medical research.

This course offers an exit point of a Graduate Diploma of Medical Research after 1 year of full-time study.

  • 1 Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of developments in one or more disciplines relevant to medical research in order to identify and address a research problem.
  • 2 Source, critically analyse, consolidate and synthesize complex information from a range of sources to formulate a research question or hypothesis.
  • 3 Design and conduct experiments, critically evaluate, analyse and interpret complex scientific data, to develop new understanding of research problems with a high level of independence.
  • 4 Demonstrate advanced research and technical skills to propose appropriate methodology, conduct experiments and collect data with minimal supervision in order to address a research questions or test a hypothesis.
  • 5 Effectively communicate complex knowledge and ideas with intellectual independence in oral and written forms to a variety of audiences.
  • 6 Demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on the importance and impact of their own research within the field and in a global context.
  • 7 Conduct their work in a legally, ethically, socially and culturally responsible manner.
  • Career outcomes

    There are many career pathways available for students completing a postgraduate degree in this field which include: designing and conducting experiments, critically evaluating research outcomes, analysing and interpreting complex scientific data and the development and understanding of research problems. You may also have the opportunity to conduct research which is significant on a global level.

    Entry requirements

    Entry: Requirements A minimum of a science-based Bachelor degree of the University of Tasmania or of another University or tertiary Institute that is deemed equivalent. Where an undergraduate degree has been recently obtained, a minimum average grade of 60% (credit) in the final 2 years would be required. Applicants below a credit average will be considered based on a combination of academic record and relevant experience after graduation. English Language: International students must also have IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0)
    Credit for appropriate studies completed from other university courses may be granted. Refer Rule 6: Part 3 Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning.
    Articulation from Bachelor of Medical Research with Applied Honours: BMedResApplHons students will be eligible for entry to the MMedRes(spec) with advanced standing granted for up to four units (50 credit points) completed in the Applied Honours. Articulation to / from Graduate Diploma of Medical Research (Specialisation): The GradDipMedRes(spec) provides an exit award for the MMedRes(spec), for students who have completed Year 1 of the course, but have not achieved a 70% average. Students who have completed the GradDipMedRes(spec) with a 70% average will be eligible for entry to the MMedRes(spec) with advanced standing granted for Year 1 (100 credit points) of the MMedRes(spec). Articulation to Research Higher Degree: The course can be articulated with the College’s Research Higher Degree programs. Students who satisfy the requirements for the MMedRes(spec) award are eligible to apply for admission to a Higher Degree by Research (PhD)

    Options for this course

    This is a full-fee course, which means you’ll need to pay the entire amount for your studies. Commonwealth supported places are not available in this postgraduate course. However, there are still support options available for eligible students to help you manage the cost of studying this course.

    You may be able to fund all or part of your tuition fees by accessing a FEE-HELP loan from the Australian Government. FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists domestic full-fee students to pay for University, which is repaid through the Australian Tax System once you earn above a repayment threshold. This means you’ll only have to start repaying the loan once you start earning above a specific amount.

    An important note on Youth Allowance and Austudy

    The Department of Social Services has approved some accredited and professionally oriented Masters courses for student payments through Youth Allowance or Austudy. This means if you enrol in one of these courses, you may be eligible for student payments. However, please be aware that this is not the case for all Master courses.
