This unit is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Paramedic Practice (ADF Conversion). This unit includes face to face teaching blocks to supplement online material.
This unit focuses on the individual within the greater context of the health system focusing on primary health care, community-based emergency health (CBEH).The unit integrates the health systems approach with the clinical assessment and paramedic management of traumatic injuries including head and spine trauma, chest injury, burns and introduction to multiple trauma situations. A study of the microbiological and pathophysiological basis of disease and pharmacological paramedic management will underpin the subsequent unit Clinical Practice 5.

- Formulate clinically sound patient management plans based on assessment findings, knowledge of pathophysiology and patient management standards for patients (including paediatrics) experiencing a range of medical and trauma conditions. [PPCS 8.3]
- Perform a broad range of clinical and health assessment skills, demonstrating an understanding of the relevance and importance of comprehensive patient assessment to support patient management. [PPCS 8.4]
- Analyse and interpret assessment findings, to contribute to the development of a provisional diagnosis. [PPCS 5.1; PPCS 8.1]
- Apply problem solving processes to the management of patients based on assessment findings, in an inter-professional health care environment. [PPCS 8.2]
- Apply a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to facilitate the assessment of patients accommodating diverse cultural, social and socioeconomic backgrounds. [PPCS 4.2]
- Demonstrate knowledge of the changing discipline of paramedic practice, applying this knowledge to the provision of service in an inter-professional context. [PPCS 4.1; PPCS 9.1]
- Develop a team work approach to practice which will enhance the delivery of health services to the community. [PPCS 4.1]
