The teaching pattern in this unit will vary depending on the semester in which it is undertaken


This unit introduces students to a selection of current national health priorities. Students are introduced to the concepts of contextual physiology and pathophysiology and nursing practice across primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.  Students will continue to develop the capacity to use a clinical reasoning framework and person-centred approach to conduct a focused health interview. Students will learn to perform physical assessments, communicate assessment findings, and build therapeutic relationships whilst demonstrating cultural competence and an awareness of relevant legal and ethical issues.

Students will have the opportunity to further develop their Professional Portfolio in this unit.

Teaching Pattern

Theoretical and Self-directed hours distributed across 9 weeks in Semester 1 and 6 weeks in Spring School (November):

  • 18 x 50 minute lectures
  • self-directed study supported with online content

Laboratory & simulation

  • 1 x 100 minute practical lab weekly, which includes simulation
  • self-directed study

Online quizzes 15%, Evidenced based skills assessment and clinical reasoning report 40%, Written examination 45%
