"I started learning to sail in a mirror dinghy, ended up keeping watch on oil and gas tankers."

- Katie Fuller, Australian Maritime College Graduate
Due to the circumstances around COVID-19, you will begin your studies online. However, when Government guidelines change, on-campus studies will be reintroduced.
Whether you are looking to embark on a career at sea or take the next step into the maritime industry, our Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science) provides a gateway to many diverse and rewarding opportunities.
The Australian Maritime College’s Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science) degree will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to safely manage and operate any type of vessel in the merchant fleet. Our program integrates professional short courses and training at sea so that you will not only obtain a Bachelor’s degree, but also a Certificate of Competency issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

You will learn about navigation, vessel handling, cargo and passenger transport, vessel management, marine legislation and shipboard safety. Our program is also fully compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention, as amended in 2010).

Important note: Students intending to undertake units via the NSW Tafe Newcastle location are advised to check unit availability and the 'What will I enrol in' advice below as key dates and unit availability varies by delivery location. Please note: from 2020 only Domestic students will be able to apply for and commence the course from the NSW Tafe Newcastle location.

Entry requirements

We encourage you to apply for the courses you most want to study. If you’re not eligible to enter your chosen course right now, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best pathway option.

Enquire online for advice on the application process and the available pathways to study at UTAS.

Domestic applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years)

Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. In 2019, the lowest ATAR to receive an offer into this course was 51.85. The lowest ATAR to receive an offer may change from year to year based on the number of applications we receive.

Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your study plan and subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.

To be eligible for an offer, you must have satisfactory achievement in the following Tasmanian Senior Secondary subjects (or equivalent):

  • General Mathematics (MTG315115); and
  • Chemistry (CHM415115) or Physics (PHY415115) or Physical Sciences (PSC315118) and
  • Australian Year 10 pass in English (or equivalent) or higher

If you have not met this prerequisite, you will need to complete a UTAS foundation unit before you start your course.

All other domestic applicants

To be eligible for an offer, you must:

  • meet the University’s General Entry Requirements based on your prior studies and experience; and
  • Have prior study or experience equivalent to a satisfactory achievement in General Mathematics (MTG315115) and one of Chemistry (CHM415115) or Physics (PHY415115) or Physical Sciences (PSC315118) at Tasmanian Senior Secondary level. If you have not met this prerequisite, you will need to complete a UTAS Foundation Unit before you start your course.

A range of admission pathways are available to students with relevant prior studies in nautical science. These are outlined in the “Alternative entry pathways” section below.
