You will learn about navigation, vessel handling, cargo and passenger transport, vessel management, marine legislation and shipboard safety. Our program is also fully compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention, as amended in 2010).
Important note: Students intending to undertake units via the NSW Tafe Newcastle location are advised to check unit availability and the 'What will I enrol in' advice below as key dates and unit availability varies by delivery location. Please note: from 2020 only Domestic students will be able to apply for and commence the course from the NSW Tafe Newcastle location.

Course objectives
Our degree is built to prepare you for your career at sea, with unmatched training and experience, you will have the flexibility to choose your own path as a Navigating Deck Officer.In addition to developing broad and coherent nautical knowledge required to work in any position as a Navigation Officer aboard a vessel, you will acquire core skills in operational aspects, control precision, and spatial orientation.
You will also develop professional soft skills such as critical thinking, decision making, time management and effective communication. This core knowledge is designed so that you are fully equipped to work in diverse positions around the world.
Our degree is also focused on delivering genuine practical experience, with a built-in sea-time phase of your AMC seafaring qualification. Through our integrated learning structure, you will have the opportunity to directly link academic learning with its practical application in the workplace.

Learning outcomes
Demonstrate broad and coherent nautical knowledge by:
- Applying assorted navigation concepts to safely plan and conduct a voyage.
- Applying principles of cargo handling and storage on board a ship at the management level.
Assess and solve nautical problems by:
- Analysing, interpreting and evaluating a range of available data to inform decision making in standard-operational and emergency related scenarios on a commercial ship.
- Implementing responses which acknowledge stakeholders’ expectations and needs.
Practice effective leadership as a master of a ship by:
- Applying relevant management theories to control the operation of a ship and care for the persons on board.
- Exhibiting appropriate communication, motivation, collaboration and decision-making strategies which enable safe operation of a commercial ship.
Demonstrate personal and professional stewardship through:
- Locating and adhering to regulatory frameworks and ethical codes relevant to ship operation in the international shipping industry.
- Performing all tasks in an ethical manner where the safety of persons and protection of the natural environment are of the greatest importance.

The Australian Maritime College’s specialist facilities are intensely used by students, researchers, defence organisations, government bodies, and international industry partners to innovate and develop new designs, undertake research to improve efficiency, and safety train seafarers and students.
These include the Cavitation Research Lab, Navigational and Engineering Simulators, Model Test Basin, Towing Tank, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Lab, and our fleet of training vessels.
As an undergraduate you will take full advantage of our world class facilities as a mandatory part of your studies. This both empowers you to confidently and safety operate vessels and develops a holistic understanding of your role in the broader maritime industry.
Work placement
AMC has strong collaborative connections with the Australian maritime and shipbuilding industry. This means when you study at AMC, you’ll get real-work, hands-on experience that is unmatched.
Sea-time is a built-in phase of the AMC seafaring qualification. You will be encouraged to gain employment as a trainee deck officer (Deck Cadet) with a shipping company in order to obtain qualifying sea service and on the job training as required by the Australian Maritime and Safety Authority (AMSA). Employment may be sort before or after Year 1 studies (also known as pre-sea training).
On completion of relevant phases of study, you will be eligible to undertake the AMSA examinations. Upon successful completion, you will acquire the required certificate of competency to serve on ships.
Career outcomes
The Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science) is the recognised pathway to becoming an AMSA certified deck officer. Whether you are seeking a career ashore or senior shore-based positions, your studies at the Australian Maritime College will prepare you with a sought-after skill set and a defined understanding of the maritime industry.

- Governmental or intergovernmental regulators and organisations such as AMSA, EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency), IMO (International Maritime Organisation)

- Product, R&D, sales and service managers in companies supplying maritime equipment

Professional Recognition
The Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science) and nested Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Nautical Science) is approved by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for eligibility towards the following Certificates of Competency: Watchkeeper Deck, Mate/Master Less than 500GT, Chief Mate and Master Class 1.

Conversion Pathway (Seafaring: 23Q & 23R)
The conversion pathway provides an opportunity for Australian and International Ships Officers to convert their existing professional and academic qualifications to a Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science) or Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) degree. The conversion pathway is available to international and domestic students via distance study.
Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science)
To be eligible students must have studied up to STCW Management level prior to commencement of the conversion pathway.
Holders of a Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency will need to complete 4 units.
Holders of a Chief Mate or Watchkeeper Deck Certificate of Competency will need to complete 6 units.
Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Engineering)
To be eligible students must have studied up to STCW Management level prior to commencement of the conversion pathway.
Holders of a Chief Engineer / Engineer Class 1 Certificate of Competency will need to complete 4 units.
Holders of a Second Engineer / Engineer Class 2 or Engineer Watchkeeper Certificate of Competency will need to complete 6 units.

Eligibility
We encourage you to apply for the courses you most want to study. If you’re not eligible to enter your chosen course right now, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best pathway option.

Domestic applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years)
Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. In 2019, the lowest ATAR to receive an offer into this course was 51.85. The lowest ATAR to receive an offer may change from year to year based on the number of applications we receive.
Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your study plan and subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.
To be eligible for an offer, you must have satisfactory achievement in the following Tasmanian Senior Secondary subjects (or equivalent):
- General Mathematics (MTG315115); and
- Chemistry (CHM415115) or Physics (PHY415115) or Physical Sciences (PSC315118) and
- Australian Year 10 pass in English (or equivalent) or higher
If you have not met this prerequisite, you will need to complete a UTAS foundation unit before you start your course.
All other domestic applicants
To be eligible for an offer, you must:
- meet the University’s General Entry Requirements based on your prior studies and experience; and
- Have prior study or experience equivalent to a satisfactory achievement in General Mathematics (MTG315115) and one of Chemistry (CHM415115) or Physics (PHY415115) or Physical Sciences (PSC315118) at Tasmanian Senior Secondary level. If you have not met this prerequisite, you will need to complete a UTAS Foundation Unit before you start your course.
A range of admission pathways are available to students with relevant prior studies in nautical science. These are outlined in the “Alternative entry pathways” section below.
Special consideration
If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors, including economic hardship, serious medical condition or disability.
We can only approve applications for special consideration where we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course. Special consideration is not available for international applicants.
International applicants

Credit transfer
You may be eligible for advanced standing (i.e. credit points) in this degree if you:
- Have completed an award such as a Diploma or Advanced Diploma from TAFE or another institution;
- Are currently studying another Bachelor degree at the University or at another institution;
- Have completed a Bachelor degree at the University or an equivalent award from another institution.

Students who have completed The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Nautical Science) can articulate to this degree with full credit.

Alternative entry pathways
If you meet the minimum ATAR but haven't completed the required pre-requisite unit(s), we offer foundation units to help you bridge the gap. Many run in spring and summer school so you can meet a prerequisite and not delay the start of your Bachelor level studies. HECS scholarships may also be available for domestic students.

If you do not meet the minimum ATAR you should consider enrolment in the Diploma of University Studies (Science Specialisation), which includes the mathematics and chemistry foundation units, as a pathway to this degree:

Students meeting the specified entry requirements may be admitted to the course according to one of the pathways listed below:
Watchkeeper Deck
- Completion of AMSA approved Pre Sea Deck training (or equivalent) including evidence of minimum of 6 months sea-time on vessels greater than or equal to 500GT on company letterhead AND evidence of completion of approved monitored on board training program. (Task and Guided Study workbooks) OR
- Certificate of Proficiency as Integrated Rating and completion of 24 months sea-time as per Marine Order 71, and completion of an approved monitored on board training program for Integrated Rating. (Task and Guided Study workbooks) OR
- Completion of 36 months sea-time as per Marine Order 71.
Watchkeeper Deck - RAN Bridging (domestic students only)
- RAN Bridge Watchkeeping / Warfare Certificate (BWC)
Mate / Master < 500GT
- Unrestricted Master Class 5 OR
- Unrestricted Master <24m NC (Near Coastal) COC (Certificate of Competency) OR
- Unrestricted Master Class 4 OR
- Hold or have held an Unrestricted Master <35m NC (Near Coastal) COC (Certificate of Competency)
Chief Mate / Master
- Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Deck Watchkeeper Certificate of Competency OR
- Diploma of Applied Science (Mate/Master <500GT) OR
- Equivalent qualification
Conversion Pathway
- Master Class 1 OR
- AMC's 3 year J2U Advanced Diploma (Nautical Science) with Certificate of Competency (CoC)
- Note: must have studied up to STCW Management level prior to commencement of the conversion pathway

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

International students

Scholarships for domestic students

Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1 open at the beginning of August and close strictly on 31 October in the year prior to study.

Additional costs
Please note, the costs associated with obtaining Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) qualifications (including sea time assessment, oral examinations and optional units) are not included in the course tuition fees.
