In this course, you'll gain the knowledge, analysis skills and practical competencies through using the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and National Model Clinical Governance Framework as the focus for study. The underlying theories and models, purpose, evidence for, application and systems to review each of the standards will be investigated. You'll also get opportunities to engage with Australian experts and participate in industry case studies and analysis.
The Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Safety and Quality) is offered on a part-time basis.
The certificate is delivered fully online, with optional half-day masterclasses (2-3 per semester) which will be delivered on campus in Sydney. Students will have the option to participate via videoconference.
Tuition fee discount available in 2023
Domestic students commencing this degree in 2023 may be eligible to receive a 25% HECS and SSAF fee waiver. Fee waivers will be automatically applied on enrolment.

Course objectives
The Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Safety and Quality), developed and delivered by the Australian Institute of Health Service Management.
The overall purpose of the Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Safety and Quality) course is to develop graduates who have in-depth understanding and practical application of the National Model Clinical Governance Framework and National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHSS). The course provides the knowledge and competencies for students to review the overarching National Model Clinical Governance Framework to determine appropriate systems for governance, accountability and transparency to meet the health industry needs. Students will also review their organisational management requirements and clinical systems for effectiveness.
The units are developed in collaboration with industry to reflect industry practices and to develop graduates to meet workforce shortages and demands. Graduates will be able to apply critical, technical and creative skills to making ethical and social decisions and judgements in complex health information setting. A blended learning approach enables students to engage with local and national leaders, and partake in actual industry assessments strategies, including data analysis, case studies and projects.
Articulation into further study in the Master of Health Service Management is possible on completion of the Graduate Certificate.

Entry requirements
For Domestic students
a) Australian Bachelor Degree or equivalent level standard in any other institution in an unrelated discipline and a minimum of one year relevant work experience in the health sector
OR
b) A minimum of five years approved relevant work experience in the health sector or other special circumstances (e.g. post-secondary qualifications) as approved by the Dean or delegated authority.
Articulation
Students completing the Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Safety and Quality) will receive advanced standing for four 12.5 credit point units of the Master of Health Service Management.
Students completing the Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Safety and Quality) will receive advanced standing for two 12.5 credit point units of the Master of Health Information Management and may apply for credit for units BAA753 and BAA756 within the MHIM.
Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Cost shouldn’t get in the way of you studying.
If you’re a domestic student, you may be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place in this course. This means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.
You may also be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. If eligible, you’ll only have to pay your tuition fees once you start earning above a specific amount.

The Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Safety and Quality) is available with 25% HECS and SSAF fee waiver for eligible domestic students commencing study in 2023.
Fee waiver details
For domestic students commencing study in 2023, we are pleased to offer this degree with a 25% HECS and SSAF fee waiver.
This waiver is valid for students admitted and commencing this course in 2023 provided the eligibility criteria are met. This waiver is valid for units offered in 2023 only.
If you are eligible, the waiver will be automatically applied upon enrolment. The waiver is not available for OUA students.
- You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident (i.e. eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place [CSP]).
- You are enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Safety and Quality) and commence study 2023.
- You must be enrolled in a minimum of one unit and must remain enrolled until after the University Census Date relevant to the semester of study. If you are on an approved Leave of Absence (LOA), you are exempt from this requirement for the duration of your approved LOA.
- To retain this fee waiver, you must engage with your enrolled units. If you have not engaged and receive a result of AN (Absent deemed failed) for all enrolled units in a given study period, will not retain the waiver/discount from the following study period onward. You cannot then apply to have the waiver/discount reinstated.
- Not be excluded from the course based on academic progress or misconduct.
