This course is offered for professionals working as middle and senior managers in health care sector who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in the management of patient safety and service quality within health care organsiations. It is appropriate for hospital administrators, risk and quality assurance managers, and senior medical, nursing and allied health administrators.

The School of Health Sciences, aims to create an educational environment which values critical, reflective thinking, life-long learning, acquisition of generic attributes and professional development. This course contextualises the advanced knowledge and skills for students to understand the importance of and participate in quality and safety in Healthcare delivery. In the Graduate Diploma of Quality Services research units are introduced which extend abilities to generate and transmit solutions to complex quality and safety in healthcare problems. Course objectives are intended to:

  • advance theoretical and practical appreciation of various health care systems;
  • allow students to gain an in-depth knowledge of strategic management of health care organisations;
  • enable students to understand epidemiological issues of health care organisations;
  • generate strategies to identify and implement best practice models for quality service design;
  • demonstrate problem solving and critical analysis skills for quality evaluation;
  • enable students to critique workplace culture and its impact on quality service delivery and;
  • develop solutions to address barriers to the development of a quality culture in the workplace.
  • 1 Apply knowledge of the elements of health care systems that impact upon quality service delivery to the critical analysis of work place scenarios.
  • 2 Develop the epidemiological and statistical skills necessary for evidence-based medicine, quality service evaluation and improvement.
  • 3 Demonstrate interpersonal, communication and leadership skills appropriate for health care managers, skills in literature review, report writing, oral presentations, verbal and visual communications and the basic use of spreadsheet, data-base, statistical and word-processing computer software related to quality service.
  • 4 Apply knowledge of international health care systems and recent Australian health care reforms to the analysis the various models of funding, delivering, co-coordinating and developing health care quality systems.
  • 5 Demonstrate understanding of principles of quality and patient safety and their application to a service delivery and design to work place scenarios and in a health organisation.
  • 6 Demonstrate an understanding of medico-legal issues and business law as applied to the management of quality services and service design within health care organisations.
  • 7 Develop skills in health care quality measurement, quality assurance, and quality improvement and apply them to the management of quality services and service design within health care organisations.
  • 8 Use knowledge to participate in the critical analysis, development, implementation and evaluation required for quality service redesign.
  • Career outcomes

    Graduates may find employment in hospital administration, health administration or risk and quality assurance management.

    Tertiary FOR ELIGIBILITY TO BE ADMITTED TO THE COURSE: · AQF (or equivalent) undergraduate degree qualification, and be working in a health care setting. · A statement outlining area of work, and evidence of confirmation of employment. (Payslip or signed and dated statement confirming current employment status). FOR ELIGIBLITY TO RECEIVE A HECS FEE SCHOLARSHIP Registered Nurses who are employed with, or members of, a partner organisation: Registered Nurses who work for one of our partner organisations can be offered H4F - Quality and Safety specialisation, to study the year one units under a HECS fee scholarship.

    Options for this course

    This is a full-fee course, which means you’ll need to pay the full amount for your studies. Commonwealth Supported Places are not available in this course. However, there are still support options available for eligible students to help you manage the cost of studying this course.

    You may be able to fund all or part of your tuition fees by accessing a FEE-HELP loan from the Australian Government. FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists domestic full-fee students to pay for University, which is repaid through the Australian Tax System once you earn above a repayment threshold. This means you’ll only have to start repaying the loan once you start earning above a specific amount
