This April holiday program offers young people the opportunity to explore ideas in a series of collaborative, multi-art form workshops..
One workshop with three focus activities will lead participants through creative exercises that interpret different responses to the theme of Pandemic. From collectively developing our imagination about what the future could be, to the mythologizing information and ideas transmission, creativity is vital in our readiness in responding to and thinking about these timely and often taboo subjects.
focus activity 1: Fear buster:
- We all have fears. Some of us are scared of brushing our teeth at night, others are worried about the SRC speech or being popular or doing a good job, while others are worried the world might end with climate change. Lets chat about fears, big and little, then each of the participants will write these down to de-construct and re-construct, to discover new meanings as protest posters.
focus activity 2: Crisis fashion or fashion crisis:
- Design your own dust masks. The ritual wear of medicine and pandemics become the basis for this playful workshop, a re-imagining of rubber gloves and high vis as we discuss the difference between safety wear, contamination, ritual and fashion.
focus activity 3: Connections map:
- Lets map connections as we dive our fingers into soil and make some seed bombs. Soil microbes make us happy (literally) and seeds are incredible packages of DNA. Collectively lets develop new appreciation for transmission as a form of invisible communication, sometimes viral and other times life enabling. We will look at how soil microbes can be used to generate electricity and how seeds range, from ready to grow to requiring symbiotic relationships.
Pandemic workshop series is a creative studio aimed at providing young artists with opportunities and spaces for exploration, collaboration and endless possibilities for play. The workshops are suitable for beginners through to those with more experience.
- Parents must sign a consent to participate form upon arrival.
- Public programs suitable for ages 8-14
- Please bring a sense of curiosity and wear clothes to get messy in.
- Participants are to bring a drink bottle and snacks.
- Bookings essential due to limited numbers.

Bio:
Selena de Carvalho is an award winning experimental artist, whose practice responds to notions of personal ecology and human interaction with the environment. She is based in Longley Village where she actively engages in many different aspects of creative life, from building kinetic artworks to growing a garden.
